More like great taste in rock n roll. Besides the intro, the bridge with Richards and Taylor exchanging riffs and then coming together on certain chords and then lead again was truly genius. Always amazed me that Mick Taylor left the Stones. He added a lot to the Jagger/Richards sound.
Interestingly, the drums are so simple in Gimme Shelter. But then that has always been Charlie Watts style. Also, think Zepplin's "Whole Lotta Love" drums as they head into another verse. Pah, pah, pah, pah, pah, pah was nothing for a drummer, but Bonham pulled the timing off along with John Paul Jones coming in on base. Of course Bonham was one of the greatest rock drummers ever in many of their other songs. I'm probably one of the few who enjoyed their last album, "In Through The Out Door".
Another group whose drummer was under-appreciated was Ginger Baker with his duel base drums in Cream. Not sure, but believe they were the first hard rock band. Think "Sunshine of Your Love" while others were playing "Strawberry Fields Forever" or "I'm a Believer" bubblegum. Pfft. My wife loves that Flower Power crap, but gotta go with the flow and some were not so bad.
Thanks for the conversation. Disco, Rap, and Pop sucks! I'd rather listen to soft-rock like the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, or Bob Seger any time over the current blsnd stuff, even if not my favorite.
As Lynard Skynard says. "Turn It Up!"
Hey a couple suggestions if you want to check out some new bands with the old vibe.
First is Blackberry Smoke. They are a country tinged southern rock type band with some great tunes. Album called “The Whippoorwil” is my favorite.
Another newer band you might like is Greta Van Fleet. They sound just like Zeppelin but have some great songs on their EP which is called Greta Van Fleet.
I sure wish there was a new band with the 80’s hairband vibe that I could get into. I did listen to the new Judas Priest album on Amazon which came out in March. Very good with some old school Priest riffs. Priest and Deep Purple were here at one of our local venues a couple of weeks ago but I couldn’t make it. I did see Foreigner and Tesla Labor day weekend which was an awesome show. I also saw Mettallica the same week. Good week of shows for me.
