I was raised as Catholic, and will always enjoy hearing the traditional songs usually sang in those parishes. However, I will now add on many songs from other Christian religions. I friend of mine was clearing his home of unused items, and asked if I would like to take an old cassette of his; "Jubiliation! Great Gospel Performances, Volume 2; More Black Gospel". 18 songs. I just so happen to have one of those ancient home system with CD and cassette players. I had nothing to lose, so I took it.
Many of the first few songs were so amateurish, so barebones that I didn't listen to them all. I enjoyed No. 2 "How I Got Over" by Mahalia Jackson. Then I skipped over to Number 7; "Walking Around Heaven All Day" by The Caravans. Very nice. Very inspirational.
Number 9; Talk About Jesus" by Bells of Joy. No. 10; Burying Ground" by The Sensational Nightingales, No. 14; Our Father, by Five Blind Boys, No. 15; You Can't Hurry God, by The Harmonettes. No. 16; My Rock; by The Swan Silvertones. No. 17; Climbing Up on the Rough Side of the Mountain, by Rev. F.C. Barnes.
The production is not that great, but in all of these , you can hear the remnants of the Blues and the beginnings of what later became Rock & Roll. Try it, you might like it too.
I think the Royal Wedding between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex hit the right note back in May by merging African-American Gospel with the more traditional liturgical elements of the Church of England.
That was a big surprise, given how tightly the British hold on to their traditions. Maybe they asked the bride what she would like to have included.
Do a youtube search for “bethal worship”.
The Kingdom Choir’s participation in the Wedding was actually the suggestion of Prince Charles.
My son performed that in a quartet just a few weeks ago. They were amazing.
Good stuff!
If you don’t mind, I would like to mention a few I have run across in my searches for ancient dusty 78s that I really like. These are late 20s and 30s:

Thanks. I’ll have to look into these here.
So many performers from my parents generation are still worth knowing now. I recall how ‘boring and old fashioned’ I thought the Mills Brothers and Blind Boys of Alabama(?) were.
I knew of Mahalia Jackson, but have just started really listening to her on her own terms, not in comparison with Soul Singers like Aretha or R&B acts like The Supremes.
Those were not at all the same thing as Gospel in it’s own context.

Hard to beat Southern Gospel Quartet singing, especially from the 50s-70s.
Check out the Kingsmen!
There are a lot of really great black gospel singers but since that seems to be all you showed as an example I hope you realize gospel music is not just a ‘black thing’. It’s ok if you didn’t because I didn’t know there was ‘Catholic’ music. If you want to expand your gospel horizon, here are a couple of my favorites...............
Yep. There’s all kinds of gospel music. It’s the Baskin Robins of music.
Take a listen to “Clara Ward Singers” and “Wings over Jordan.”
Absolutely! Good music has no color. This just happened to be the cassette I was offered. No, I know there are plenty of fantastic Christian Music performers of every race.
Thank You for these suggestions.
Absolutely!
