African-American Senators Introduce Anti-Lynching Bill

Congress's three African-American senators introduced a bipartisan bill Friday to make lynching a federal crime.

Sens. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Tim Scott, R-S.C., drafted the bipartisan legislation, which defines the crime as "the willful act of murder by a collection of people assembled with the intention of committing an act of violence upon any person." It also classifies lynching as a hate crime that would warrant enhanced sentences.

"It's a travesty that despite repeated attempts to do so, Congress still hasn't put anti-lynching legislation on the books," Booker said in a statement. "This bill will right historical wrongs by acknowledging our country's stained past and codifying into law our commitment to abolishing this shameful practice."

The Justice for Victims of Lynching Act of 2018 notes that during the first half of the 20th century nearly 200 attempts to pass anti-lynching legislation failed to gain support from the Senate despite urging from seven sitting presidents.

It also cites statistics supported by research compiled by Tuskegee University, that more than 4,700 people were lynched between the years 1882 and 1968. About three-quarters of the victims were African-American. And according to the bill, "99 percent of all perpetrators of lynching escaped from punishment by state or local officials."

When it begins in earnest, no law will save them.

Good point. He was pulled from the truck and beaten and pummeled with cement blocks because he happened to be Caucasian.

For that reason alone he won’t be counted among those these senators are “looking out for”.

So wait... lynching people is LEGAL?

Not all of them, just high tech lynchings.

Couldn’t they just use the Republican platform from Abraham Lincoln?

Wait.. these dumbells DO KNOW that it was the democrat KKK that did the lynching, right?

It’s desperation and a pathetic attempt to be relevant. Oh, and to get reparations.

I don’t recall ever hearing of any blacks being lynched in recent history.

Murder is already a crime.

How it going to change anything by passing a law that isn’t needed?

I was surprised that my (white) children see race relations today as worse than they ever were - simply because meaningful discussion has stopped. When Eric Holder mentioned an “honest discussion about race”, he really meant there would NEVER be an honest discussion about race.

And once again, these IDIOTS take the opportunity to prove why they are too stupid to hold a senate seat. With the introduction of this bill, they are attempting to make blacks victims AGAIN, to garner sympathy and special treatment. By this very act, they are actually calling blacks inferior by implying that they need special treatment. And, isn't lynching a form of murder? Don't we have laws against murder already?

C'mon senators. Don't you have women to grope? Men to perform fellatio on, to literally get ahead? Don't you have people to save from capsizing an island? Or some old white man named "Foty-five" to impeach? I suggest you drop this lynching nonsense and get to it!

It is also an attempt to get the reparations camels nose under the tent by other means. First this, then reparations for families of lynching victims (wonder if it covers whites as well. Fair number of white guys met an early end by ‘unofficial justice’ during those years.) and next onto those who have been impacted by historical injustices (except American Indians).

Feelin’ scared, are they? Those traitorous jerks SHOULD be worried. One day it’s going to blow up in their faces and the paper they waste on their frivolous self-protecting laws won’t be good for anything, except perhaps as kindling for their pyres.

Politic - If Republicans don’t get behind it then there will be ads saying Republicans support lynching. I wager the ads are already in the can ready to run before the midterms.
