‘Murphy Brown’ Review: Candice Bergen-Led CBS Revival Is Yesterday’s News
Deadline Hollywood ^ | September 27, 2018 | Dominic Patten

Rosenstein Meeting To Watch Kavanaugh... Shined up with tweets about dating Donald Trump, fourth-wall-cracking quips and Roseanne implosion asides, the revival of Murphy Brown is very meta. Yet despite those lofty lunges, the CBS sitcom still led by Candice Bergen just can’t grasp the big-picture reality of 2018.

To put it another way, FYI, if you really don’t want to “tarnish” your legacy, to quote Bergen’s now-unretired TV journalist Brown in the first episode of this de facto 11th season, then hit the reset button on this revival ASAP before irrelevance comes knocking.

Is it just me or that review virtually unreadable? I think that guy moonlights writing Chinese takeout menus.

Given that show is being set up to be a liberal resistance platform, it would be funny if they get Colin Kaepernick to cameo as her secretary on an episode.

Either play himself, saying he needs the work, or play a character.

I was going to watch it but had a phone call from a friend to discuss Kavanaugh. I figured it would an outdated reboot, everyone is now in their 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s.

I may try and catch it on Amazon if it possible. Will not subscribe to CBS All Access for that.

The very early ratings (household) numbers are in and Murphy Brown’s household rating is less than half of what Roseanne got for the first episode back in March.

"Murphy Brown" was supposed to be the "Roseanne" reboot for liberals.

Think these numbers are bad? Just wait until "The Connors" arrives. I can't wait for President Trump's and Roseanne Barr's tweets of schadenfreude and vindication.

Actually Rowan and Martin lampooned everyone. Now during the 1968 election they asked both Nixon and Humphrey to come on.

Humphrey thought it beneath him and did not do it. Nixon though realized how powerful the medium was and did do it.
“Sock it to me?”

The producer of the show says he beliefs that got Nixon elected because it showed he had a sense of humor and could poke fun of himself. I think that very true. I was kid then but I remember that episode. Nixon was pretty funny.

By the way I don’t know what Rowan and Martin were politically, they always seemed like Republicans to me.

And in the early 70s, Ronald Reagan was on The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast. I think it's still out there on YouTube.

I have seen it. In fact Reagan was on several of the roasts and was funny as all get out. He and Dean Martin were very close friends. Watching those old roasts you saw a lot of great comedians and some of the stuff they were doing then would be considered Politically Incorrect in this era.

I don’t think it will last long. Fake newsroom where everyone hates Trumps, that plot hasn’t done much for CNN’s ratings.

The full ratings are in. Murphy Brown is a flop:

Roseanne premiere: 5.1 in the demo, 18.16 million viewers
Will and Grace premiere: 2.9 in the demo 10.04 million viewers
Murphy Brown premiere: 1.1 in the demo, 7.4 million viewers

Agreed, the Conners is going to flop badly.

Looking back at the original Murphy Brown with today’s “eyes” it is clear the character Murphy Brown was a self center, vengeful, mean, ex-addict that bullied everyone around her.

Her “hi-jinks” today would at minimum earn her a restraining order from everyone she came in contact with.

In some ways she was portrayed accurately as a “reporter” or interview since she usually already had a preconceived idea about a story or a person before she did any research and made sure her view would be the one presented.

The shows “humor” was topical and did not hold up well. I can not see any of young generation watching re-runs or even tuning in to watch the re-boot. One season of less before it is gone for good.

Mindless TV watching was something common back then.

So true. So true.

What I remember is that Candice seemed to deliver every line with the same intonation.

Anger, joy, fear, disgust, surprise were all the same to her.

Eldin, the house painter, was the only good or memorable thing on the show and the actor who played him is dead.

There must have been a lot of rooms in her building for a painter to always be around, but we didn't wonder about things back then.

Well tonight I finally was able to see the Murphy Brown reboot and it is horrible. I wasn't a big fan of the original one back in the day. To say it is Left is an understatement, it is just plain bad.

Whoever thought this was a good idea must be devoid of any new creativity.

To see Bergen and company 20 years after going off the air originally is sad and pathetic. These people trying to relevant again and push the Lefty Democrat propaganda is just unbearable to watch. It's like a reunion of old Communists after the Soviet Union fell looking back on the “Good” times.

Watching poor Frank is terrible, a totally emasculated man with nothing going for him. Miles is a train wreck, and poor Corky is still trying to be perky, at least she looks pretty good for her age.

All in all this reboot was a huge mistake and unless they got a one season guarantee it will mercifully be canceled soon.

Yes, it’s the answer to a question that no one axed.
