I met him on a plane once, got to shake his hand. His book was in my checked bag unfortunately. Nice guy.
I heard he was impossible for a while. Then when (suddenly) his skills were recognized and needed again, he accepted what he accomplished.
Being told he was the scum of the earth by his officers, then being awarded for bravery, then tossed to the side, then needed again. And promoted.
One can imagine the frustration.
I’m glad he got retired as Gunny (E-7). He deserved it and deserves a place in the Pantheon of Righteous Warriors.
