VIDEO: Raccoon scales Ocean City building before jumping down, running off
Fox 29 ^ | September 22, 2018

A man on vacation in Ocean City, New Jersey captured incredible video of a raccoon scaling the side of a building and climbing several stories.

Micha Rea, a South Carolina resident, was walking the boardwalk with friends when he says they spotted the raccoon roughly nine stories up on the side of a building.

Rea broke out his camera and started recording. He films the raccoon holding onto the wall of an apartment complex, before showing the group of people who had gathered, including animal control.

By the time the camera turns back to the raccoon, the critter has decided it’s time to get off the wall. The raccoon appears to leap off the wall, spinning as it falls to the ground.

The impact is hard to watch, but the raccoon pops right up and runs off.

In the video, you can see someone on a balcony attempting to catch it, but unfortunately misses.

I saw a squirrel fall about 20 feet from a phone/TV cable and hit concrete. It didn't get up and run away. It died. It's what you hit and how you land.

Aww that’s sad. The raccoon was lucky to have landed on a sandy beach on all fours.

It’s like a sugar glider. Or a flying squirrel. It spread its limbs and used its whole body to catch the air slowing itself a bit. . Though it possibly crawled in a hole and died afterwards

Most times when a raccoon is out during the day it may be rabies. However, they are also slow, disoriented, etc.

This guy may have been disoriented - but his motor skills were sure in top shape!

I am not so sure one would REALLY want to catch a free falling ‘coon as not sure it wouldn’t be construed as an
“I’m from the Government and I’m here to help” moment.

Just picture what a cat - EVEN one you feed and house - will do to you in the act of trying to ‘save’ it...

Cats do the same thing. Dogs, not quite.

All fours are important.

Cats in NYC who fall out windows below the 10th floor have a poor prognosis.

Above ten floors, the cats usually survive

The raccoon that attacked our small terrier during the day was stereotypical rabid. Charged at our dog in the yard (of course our 10 lb dog was barking at it first. But, didn’t we didn’t see it) Before we could grab our Tilly, the raccoon was on top of her. My brother chased it off. The raccoon went up in a tree and my brother waited near that’s tree till Animal Control came to get it. The raccoon tested positive for rabies. Our dog had to be quarantined during the waiting period. She was really old. She started to go into kidney failure during the quarantine period. She was put down. They tested her brain as well.

I hate raccoons.

So, the cat may fare better if it falls from a ‘higher’ floor?

They came into our yard with their little ones when our kids were playing because we had fruit trees. One time I picked a green peach, winged it at one. Hit it in the head and it knocked it cold for about 30 seconds. It got up and wobbled away. Racoons seem to have a memory for danger, since that stopped them for quite a while.
