After being rumored for nearly a year, the New York Mets announced today that Entercom News 880 WCBS New York will become their flagship radio station for the 2019 MLB season.

The new contact will run through 2025 and brings the franchise back to the former CBS Radio cluster where they had been heard on WFAN from its launch in 1987 until the end of the 2012 season. The team’s broadcasts are currently heard on iHeartMedia Talk 710 WOR. Entercom will also take over the Spanish-language broadcast rights which are currently heard on ESPN’s “ESPN Deportes 1050” WEPN with no station announced. WCBS previously served as flagship station for the New York Yankees from 2002-2013 before they moved to WFAN.

From National Lampoon’s fictional Letters From the Editors:

Dear Sirs:
Meet the Mets, Meet the Mets,
Come on out and beat the Mets
—The NY Mets

(Then, after Mets beat Red Sox in 86 world series)

Dear Boston Red Sox:
You guys could choke on sherbert.
—The New York Mets

Thank God! They’ve wrecked Rush’s show since he moved from WABC to WOR.

‘86 World Series? You mean events that happened in the last century, or would that be 1886?

I also recall one year the Yankees losing the World Series and someone called up WFAN, then the Mets station, that night and sang:

Happy days are here again, they’re crying in their beer again
It is wait until next year again, happy days are here again

WOR has Rush,Hannity, etc (I stream them regularly) but they also promote the Mets pretty heavily.I wonder how they’ll be affected.

It stinks when political talk shows get pre-empted by baseball (yeah I like baseball too, but...)

In Boston WRKO had the Red Sox and conservative host Howie Carr would lose his final hour or so (on his “flagship”) because “we have the very exciting Red Sox pregame show...” and he advised listeners to hear the rest of his show on a Worcester station. Then the Red Sox moved to a sister station (first on AM, then on FM) and no more pre emptions.

I think Yankees are on WVMT Burlington VT so there are some talk show pre-emptions there.

Since I’m a Yankees fan, I’m particularly annoyed about the Mets interrupting my listening pleasure.

Carr sometimes subs for Mark Simone. I really like him although I’ve heard he started out as a Never Trumper.

You mean that there are conservative talk shows in Vermont? I'm surprised the communists, lead by Bernie Sanders, haven't banned anything but Pravda radio up there.

Great news. Its a more powerful station and better yet, Rush Limbaugh will no longer be preempted by Mets games.

Francesa retired last year, came back this year. Shorter program during the week and I think he’s doing Sunday morning football through an app.
