My thoughts and prayers are with your dear friend. This is exactly what took my Dad way from me when he was 51. I pray that more modern treatments will give your pal a chance.
I believe surgery for cancer makes the situation worse, the body is working so hard to heal the surgery area the cancer spreads!!! Maybe this is for the best and he will have a better chance staying on the chemo they have NEW treatments using your OWN immune system and genetics to fight cancer but not sure of the type of carcinoma your friend has!!! My prayers are with your friend, this does sound bad however, God Bless him!!!!

If your friend is over weight and does in fact want to seriously beat this, have him research the effects of fasting on cancer. Sugar provides fuel to cancer so his sugar intake needs to be DRASTICALLY reduced. Down to like Atkins diet level - 20 carbs max.
In the mean time, prayers up.
