This is the kind of crate we have used with great success (wire mesh not Molded plastic):

It comes in many sizes. We use the largest, 48”.

And keep talking to them, explaining that this is just temporary.

I have had great success with cats by using simple language with them, rather like ebonics, and repeating simple concepts. When we had to move house, I used two cardboard-box "houses" and a cat figurine, and showed them to our cat over and over for two weeks prior to the move.

Example:

"Mommy/Daddy/Kitty move house!" (move toy car from one house to the other)

"Kitty move house!" (move the cat figurine to the top of the car and from one to the other).

"Sofa move, kitty basket move." (move dollhouse sofa, dollhouse cat basket) etc etc, whatever your cat finds meaningful -- ours had a blanket and basket)

"New house good, good, good! Kitty new house! Kitty bed! Kitty food! New house treats!"

Repeat this with encouraging and upbeat vocal tones every day, stroking the cat if possible.

When the move actually came, she sat up on top of a pile of stuff on the console between us in the front seats and looked out the windshield most of the way 150 miles down the road.

My experience is that after a half hour of banshee like wailing, they exhaust themselves and sink into a dull stupor until it’s over.

But before falling out, they put their paws up to the back seat windows, panting and wailing frantically at passing cars and truck drivers, hoping someone will rescue them from their cruel family member.

The cats (and wife) were pretty chill for this move.

Especially this one, Miss Paws Out!

Thanks. I can’t believe how good it worked actually. I had gotten some homeo pathic calming spray Plus had some other sort of tranquilizers from the vet from a while ago ago, but didn’t need any of it. When I would go into the camper to check on the kitties I would lay on the bed and they would just lay by me purring. As if they were home.

We Kept the camper because we thought we could actually take them with us on a trip if we needed to. As long as it wasn’t overly hot or overly cold. We do have a heater and AC, I wouldn’t want to run it all the time.

Hope you are doing well! I’ve been off free republic for a while, trying to get my arms to heal. But I miss it so I sneak back now and then!

What happened to your arms, sweetie?

I could see keeping a camper for that same reason. If you had some place to park it on your property. It’s ingenious. Cats don’t know they are really traveling and they would consider it just a nice room.

It wasn’t bad. I’d stop and clean it out then give it a good cleaning in the hotel room.

This looks good for kitty transport. It’s lightweight, airy, made for pets, cheap and collapsible. Roomy enough for small litter box, toys, beds and food/water dishes. Comes in several sizes.
