Homeowners in Leander, Texas neighborhood distressed over rattlesnake invasion

A subdivision in a small Texas town north of Austin is facing a dangerous influx of rattlesnakes...Brown came across a baby rattlesnake in his own yard, where his two-year-old daughter and three dogs often play...According to KXAN, local authorities are aware of the issue, but to Brown's knowledge, they haven't done much other than recommend people take preventive measures by cleaning up any overgrown brush or getting rid of places where snakes can hide...As for Brown, he thinks the snakes are victims too and people should heed the recommendations from authorities. I don't want a child, adult, or dog to be bit," Brown said. "I just think people could pick up stuff in their yards, and have situational awareness. If the snakes have no reason to take up residence in your yard, they will go elsewhere."

Good grief!! That is terrifying to hear, about your dear mom.

I am SO glad she is going to be okay. When do you think she’ll be out of ICU?

Prayers up, for her.

I don’t see that many here in the Florida Panhandle. I stay out of the bushes during the Summer.

Around 15 years ago I killed an Eastern Diamondback which was just under 7 feet. Very heavy bodied too.

When it comes to snakes I think it was “the Fat Broad” in B.C. cartoon strips that had it right.

Baloney. Typical modern snowflake thinking. The problem is what they define as “leaving them alone”. That can include failing to notice them as you walk by or as you pick something up.

I am fairly well read, and I have never seen a single account of people who settled the American west opining that rattlers will leave you alone if you don’t mess with them.

My son has killed 28 rattlesnakes on his porch this year, that doesn’t count those in the yard and around the perimeter. His house is miles from any other and the only water source for miles. His dog used to kill them but has been bitten twice and now steers clear of them.

Thank you! Lots of prayers have been said on her behalf, and we will need lots more! We think she will be in ICU until tomorrow, and then to a regular room. Hope they will let her go home in a couple of days.

Timber rattlers are a protected species in Texas.

https://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/wild/species/timberrattlesnake/

Declare the whole area a snake sanctuary.

WOW! I was the same until a friend was bitten and required 28 vials of anti-venom, over 250K in hospital bills. I’ve been pretty leery since.

BS, I’ve seen too many strikes and too many bites and NONE of them were being bothered.

My husband grew up in snake infested country and to this day wear boots exclusively. They certainly have kept him from harm many times.

“Ah tells you, Frahnk, sneck eez sneck”!...he's right - I killed one in our back yard a few years ago - probably a garter snake or one of the generally harmless other varieties here in south Jersey - I had chased it or a relative back into the woods in back of the house a day or two before, but this time it was at the top of the steps literally throwing itself against the sliding doors trying to get on to the back porch, and I took a shovel to it - bravo for your step-dad.....

Oh, protected? Then a Timber Rattler should be -just- fine snaking his way through Texas. Him knowing his rarity will be a real source of pride and will protect him from all harm.
He will be feted by Texans in every town he shows up in. They will throw BBQs and dances in his honor.

Just ask the Comanches how helpful they found government protected status when dealing with Texas.
Just because some do-gooder in Austin call it protected, doesn’t make it have the slightest effect.
