Smith Hickenlooper served honorably as a private in field artillery in WWI.
He was best known as a judge, nominated by Warren G Harding for a US District Court in Southern District of Ohio.
Calvin Coolidge later nominated him to the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
Smiths wife was Anna Bailey Wright of Cincinnati OH.
John Hickenloopers Great Grandfather was Andrew Hickenlooper:
ANDREW HICKENLOOPER

Andrew as a surveyor for the City of Cincinnati, and then civil engineer, politician, industrialist, and a Union Army lieutenant colonel of artillery and engineers. In recognition of his service, in 1866, he was nominated and confirmed for appointment as a brevet brigadier general of volunteers to rank from March 13, 1865...”
He saw the Battles of Shiloh. During the Vicksburg campaign he wrote the Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton asking for a promotion, for he had maxed his opportunities for advancement in his current situation at that time.
Hickenlooper served through the Atlanta campaign as an engineer with distinguished honor and participated in Sherman’s March to the Sea, and the advance through the Carolinas. He was endorsed for brigadier general by Generals William Sherman, Oliver O. Howard, and Ulysses S. Grant. On January 13, 1866 President Andrew Johnson nominated Hickenlooper for appointment to the grade of brevet brigadier general of volunteers, to rank from March 13, 1865 and the United States Senate confirmed the appointment on March 12, 1866 ”
He was elected Lt Gov under Gov Charles Foster. He wrote a book about the battle of Shiloh.
Based on this information, while I think most of us would consider his grandfather and great grandfathers to have been a patriots, nevertheless, political connections were made, and groundwork was laid for his progeny to pursue political careers if so inclined.
