The next chapter in Dick Wolf‘s criminal justice franchise is officially in the works with NBC ordering 13 episodes of Law & Order: Hate Crimes. Per a release, this new series is “based on New York’s actual Hate Crimes Task Force, the second oldest bias-based task force in the U.S. The unit, which pledges to uphold a zero tolerance policy against discrimination of any kind, works under the NYPD’s real Special Victims Unit and often borrows SVU’s detectives to assist in their investigations.”
As you might have been able to infer from that last sentence, the Hate Crimes team will be introduced during the upcoming 20th season of Law & Order: SVU before becoming its own series. An exact premiere date — or even a time frame — is not yet known. Joining Wolf as a co-creator is SVU showrunner Warren Leight.
“As with all of my crime shows, I want to depict what’s really going on in our cities and shine a light on the wide-ranging victims and show that justice can prevail,” Wolf said in a statement. “Twenty years ago when SVU began, very few people felt comfortable coming forward and reporting these crimes, but when you bring the stories into people’s living rooms – with characters as empathetic as Olivia Benson – a real dialogue can begin. That’s what I hope we can do with this new show in a world where hate crimes have reached an egregious level.”
Added Leight, “I’m extremely impressed by the actual men and women investigating these cases in a city as complicated and diverse as New York. The work they are doing puts them on the front lines in a battle for the soul of our city and nation. I’m thrilled about the chance to reunite with Dick and NBC to portray the reality of this crisis.”
Thanks! I watched SVU until the season after Stabler left and then lost interest. I still enjoy watching old episodes on Hulu. The Crown is a fantastic show. :D
Hey Hollywood, here’s a new idea ... how about having a new idea?
I used to like Law and Order. It was fairly interesting most of the time. The one guy who played the district attorney has gone on to play a gay man who has an affair with another woman’s husband played by Martin Sheen. It’s a comedy that is distinctly not funny starring Jane Fonda and Lilly Tomlin who become good friends after their husbands divorce them and get gay married. The thing about comedy is that it is sometimes insensitive and the show is so sensitive to being insensitive that there is nothing funny about it. Like those shows where the audience applauds and hoots and goes whooooo but never actually laughs. Anyway I don’t recommend it. It’s one of NetFlix original series.

Those odd ball shows are the best. Those are the ones with the L&O and Criminal Minds (and Monk) marathons. Till Wrestling interferes with my groove at 8 PM lol
That is EXACTLY the channel I have been watching so I don’t have to listen to the hatefest going on against OUR POTUS!!! I think I have seen every episode of each show at least 10 times!!!!
L&O was totally worthless after Michael Moriarty left. Haven’t watched it in decades.

Same here, since the late 90s. I liked the original L&O, never watched SVU.
I always used to clap when the DAs lost a case. I especially couldn’t stand that Sam waterson character. Didn’t care what the perp got away with. Just happy to see the DA and crew unhappy.
Republicans should oppose all hate speech designations.

sounds like it will be SJW crap....I hate the very concept of a hate crime...who cares about the motivation in a criminal law setting. what’s worse some one kills for money or kills because they just hate the person both just as dead and both murders should be thrown into the deepest darkest hole.
