Need sources to the correct version of the Forrestal incident I know there are many floating around many total BS.
Many here have links to the correct version. I remember seeing videos or "films" back then in school at NAS Jax on the fire but cant recall how they portrayed it

Then he never got treated on the Forrestal and since 24 hours later he was in a bar in Saigon and stayed at the home of a NYT reporter for a week, never mentioned being injured or treated in Saigon.
The NYT article written by his new friend does not report an injury. His fathers letter indicated he was unscratched.
Any book that uses McCains version as a source - is at best embellished. You can tell which ones they are because they say McCains plane was hit by the rocket and the true victim LCDR Fred White is airbrushed out. Never mentioned

No officer leaves his buddies behind on a burning crippled ship with 134 deaths and 160 injuries to be investigated by debriefings

To believe the Tin Foil rumor about the fire would be to say millions of sailors who have actually seen the FD raw footage in FF and DC schools are idiots. Fact. Air Boss sets aircraft or approves positions and launch order. Many things determine this.
His plane was port side aft of the JBD pointed in the directly roughly in the vicinity of the island or just aft. The errant launch came from starboard aft into White and McCains direction.
How many have been involved with a shipboard fire investigation? NIS as called back in the day does this. You get taken aside from other crewmwmbers as soon as soon as time allows and you are questioned to their satisfaction and others also investigate.
Did McCain fight the fire? No, likely not. Pilots not expected too. Economics {invested cost in pilot training} is part of the reason and FF and DC training and lack thereof is another. Those positions are Ships Company Officers manned and overseen.
The Navy during a 2 yr timeframe had THREE Major Carrier Fires including this one. These fires especially Forestall however did change Naval FF/DC protocols and brought automation lessening the chance of other such disasters.
