Buzz Aldrin appeared to criticize Neil Armstrong biopic First Man for leaving out the planting of the American flag on the Moon.
The 88-year-old, who was the second man to set foot on the Moon, on Sunday tweeted a picture of the flag planted after their landing in 1969.
He captioned the photo: 'Proud to be an American.' Aldrin also re-tweeted a photo of him saluting next to the same picture. It is an apparent dig at Oscar-winning director Damian Chazelle's decision not to include the planting of the flag on the Moon at the end of his critically acclaimed movie.
The film is not kind in its portrayal of Aldrin, with Corey Stoll's performance painting him as an 'obnoxious loudmouth' and 'so blunt about his ambition that no one can stand him.'
First Man, tipped to win big at the Oscars, opened the Venice Film Festival on Wednesday to criticism that it deliberately downplayed American patriotism.
Starring Ryan Gosling as Armstrong, the film begins in 1961 as the US trails the Soviet Union in the space race and takes viewers up to the Moon landing in 1969.
But it came under fire for not including the moment the astronauts planted the American flag, with Gosling defending the decision by saying the achievement 'transcended countries and borders.'
Marco Rubio was among the politicians to weigh in, tweeting: 'This is total lunacy. The American people paid for that mission,on rockets built by Americans, with American technology & carrying American astronauts.
It wasnt a UN mission.'

How can you POSSIBLY have a movie about Apollo and not have the flag? It was everywhere. It was on their uniforms. It was on their equipment. It was in the mission readiness rooms. It was in the control room. It was on the friggin' rocket for goodness sakes!!!!

I am boycotting the movie. PERIOD. Ditto.
I saw the trailer a bit ago and thought....wow....this sure seems pretty negative.
Now I know why my instincts were correct.
Hollywierd could screw up anything.

I agree the removal of the U.S. flag was intentional. I also agree with the other Freeper who pegged the underlying reason why it was done. Making a movie without the U.S. flag is sort of like building cars in Ohio or Michigan with the steering wheels on the right side. It's a business decision, pure and simple.
And no, I have no intention of seeing this movie. LOL.
Knowing how the industry works, I wonder if Spielberg's omission had something to do with silly union rules in the movie business. Heck -- they filmed the Normandy beach scenes in Ireland!

United States flag flown to the moon on Apollo 11 during the historic 1969 mission. Flag is mounted to an official NASA certificate reading: This flag traveled to the Moon with Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing, July 20, 1969. Certificate is signed Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin in felt tip and has the Apollo 11 crew emblem near the center. Printed along the bottom edge are the first words by Neil Armstrong after stepping upon the moon: One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. The silk United States flag measures 6 x 4, mounted to the NASA certificate, which measures 10 x 12. Some show through of adhesive to flag corners and light toning to certificate, else near fine. Our most expensive Apollo 11 flag flown to the moon that we auctioned. https://natedsanders.com/blog/2016/10/apollo-11-flag-flown-moon/

One of my kids works in the space industry and is a complete space geek.
He was really excited about this movie and is now upset. He may still see it but will certainly be disappointed.
It’s pathetic what these idiot filmmakers do to put their personal politics over actual history.

If you want history, read non-fiction.
That said, this isn’t entertainment. It’s propaganda.

Wow, that’s pretty cool. My space geek son has a Boy Scout Merit badge patch (before they lost their way) that flew on a shuttle mission. It came with a NASA “flown in space” authentication card. He has it mounted similar to yours.

We're lucky that the roles were portrayed by White Men.
The remake will not make the same mistake.

Not going to see this one. In fact, it is rare that I will see any in the theater. I don’t want to send them a dime. They must have run out of comic book ideas so had to drudge up the Moon Landing and rewrite history to make a buck and sell their political garbage.

The same folks who get their news from Stephen Colbert.
I had lunch the other day with my mother in law. McCain came up and she was talking about how important he was. (she’s conservative, but a MIV (Medium information voter))
I said a few words to set her straight and in about two sentences changed her mind completely.

Something to think about does it get anymore American than this!
[B]acon cubes were among the meals stored in the lunar module. And it worked out that meal A, the first scheduled meal to be eaten on the Moon, consisted of bacon squares, peaches, sugar cookie cubes, pineapple grapefruit drink and coffee. They ate historys first meal on Moon slightly ahead of schedule after landing at the Sea of Tranquility. I won’t post the actual pic cuz it’s YUGE, but here’s a link to an awesome photo of a Saturn V on a crawler, en route to one of the launch pads:

I watched the trailer. i saw the flag on the left arm of Gosling only once and it’s from the front view. so you can barely see it. I suspect you can bet they’ve kept it out of almost all the scenes. No way i’m watching this.

Read an article yesterday where the director says the planted flag appears in several scenes. He just left out the actual planting scene. Dont know if thats true or not.
