Gettysburg was bloody, but only about 8,000 to 9,000 killed total. Vietnam combat deaths were 50,000+

A “casualty” during the civil war was usually more serious than later conflicts because modern medicine wasn't there yet. Many of the casualties of that battle lost a leg or an arm which effected their lives and livelihoods greatly.

Vietnam lasted about a decade. Gettysburg lasted 3 days.
