A “casualty” during the civil war was usually more serious than later conflicts because modern medicine wasn't there yet. Many of the casualties of that battle lost a leg or an arm which effected their lives and livelihoods greatly.

Battle of Sharpsburg was the worst day in US (sort of) history. 25k dead or wounded. Numbers are tough but it was a brutal day. Damn Yankees. Yeah I went there ;)

A lot of the deaths in the Civil War (perhaps a majority) were from diseases caught in camps from proximity and poor sanitation.
