For all that like to read about the WBTS if you’ve not read this one on the fabled 26th NC Infantry, especially their service at Gettysburg I highly recommend it.

We lost about as many in three days as we did in ten years in Vietnam. There were many heroes on both sides in that battle, just like Guadalcanal or the Chosin Reservoir.

Thanks, sounds like a ‘must read’

Makes me all the more sad at the destruction of monuments in Durham and Chapel Hill
Proud North Carolinians still honor their Civil War heritage

I’ve read it and enjoyed it. My ancestor was part of Pettigrew’s Brigade with the NC 47th that drove the Yankees off McPherson Ridge. Another good book is “Lee’s Tar Heels: The Pettigrew-Kirkland-MacRae Brigade,” by Earl Hess.

Hi NKP_Vet. I can presume that you’ve read this book. Does it answer the question, “How did they come to suffer such a grievous distinction?” What was that distinction?

Thanks

Since both NC and AL had operating sea ports through almost all of the war they had the best uniforms in the CSA. Best being relative. It was easy to tell them apart as they were the ones that didn’t look like tattered scarecrows.
