The battle of Gettysburg was the largest engagement of the Civil War, and--with more than 51,000 casualties--also the deadliest. The highest regimental casualty rate at Gettysburg, an estimated 85 percent, was incurred by the 26th North Carolina Infantry. Who were these North Carolinians? Why were they at Gettysburg? How did they come to suffer such a grievous distinction? In Covered with Glory, award-winning historian Rod Gragg reveals the extraordinary story of the 26th North Carolina in fascinating detail.

You or I standing up for our ancestors military honor is lost cause to themThey have no standards to stand upon themselves so others can't have them either.
Military honors should go to all who served and died. They gave their lives/limbs no matter which side they fought on.
My family (Dad's side) fought in the Revolutionary war, not so much the CW...from family history passed down.

Hi NKP_Vet. I can presume that you’ve read this book. Does it answer the question, “How did they come to suffer such a grievous distinction?” What was that distinction?
Thanks

Yeah, we hafta tip our hats to philman for putting up a respectable fight for the honor of Dixie. Yankeefa will likely be moving him up a few notches on their Enemy’s List.

“My family (Dad’s side) fought in the Revolutionary war, not so much the CW...from family history passed down. “
I have the same in my dad’s line... something like a dozen fought in the Revolution, but just my grandmother’s oldest uncle in the CW.
And in keeping with the actual topic of this thread, he was a private in the 13th Mississippi, McLaw’s Division, Longstreet’s Corps at Gettysburg, where he was killed during Barksdale’s charge through the Peach Orchard, 2nd Day.

Thankfully, my family has not had loss of life after the RW.
It was mostly due simply to their year of birth.
They were either too old or too young during the wars.
Three immediate generations, before and after me, have served in almost all branches.
Sorry for your family's loss at Gettysburg.
IMO, from a tactical view, Lee wasted his soldiers in that one. There were many other options open to him at the time.
