Authorities say a South Carolina woman has been charged with murder after killing her husband by putting eye drops into his water for several days. York County deputies said 52-year-old Lana Clayton confessed to investigators after an autopsy uncovered a high amount of tetrahydrozoline in her husband's body. The chemical is found in over-the-counter eye drops such as Visine. Authorities say 64-year-old Stephen Clayton was found dead July 21 in the couple's home in Clover. Arrest warrants and the statement from deputies didn't give a motive for the alleged poisoning. Lana Clayton also is charged with malicious tampering with a drug product or food. Jail records did not indicate if she had a lawyer.

Tetrahydrozoline is also available as a decongestant nasal spray by prescription. It can cause certain drug interactions and result in very high blood pressure and fast heart rates. It can be very toxic in certain patients.

"If you have taken certain drugs used for low mood (depression) like isocarboxazid, phenelzine, or tranylcypromine or drugs used for Parkinson's disease like selegiline or rasagiline in the last 14 days. Taking tetrahydrozoline (nasal) within 14 days of those drugs can cause very bad high blood pressure."

Drugs.com Tetrahydrozoline (nasal) can result in tachycardia and HTN

Alright! Somebody else who actually knows how to read a MSDS.

I use the LD50 argument frequently to shoot down the food Nazi’s who tell us that some innocuous ingredient will kill us all.

Drugs.com Tetrahydrozoline (nasal) can result in tachycardia and HTN

But at what dose? That information is key to interpreting any other information about the drug.

:)

The subject of my Ph.D. dissertation research *was* in the field of toxicology. So I refer to MSDS's frequently. And they are no longer officially called "MSDS"--they have a 3 letter abbreviation now. But everyone still calls them "MSDS."

You look up the MSDS for the active ingredient, in this case, tetrahydrozoline.

Tetrahydrozoline MSDS (pdf file).
