Authorities say a South Carolina woman has been charged with murder after killing her husband by putting eye drops into his water for several days. York County deputies said 52-year-old Lana Clayton confessed to investigators after an autopsy uncovered a high amount of tetrahydrozoline in her husband's body. The chemical is found in over-the-counter eye drops such as Visine. Authorities say 64-year-old Stephen Clayton was found dead July 21 in the couple's home in Clover. Arrest warrants and the statement from deputies didn't give a motive for the alleged poisoning. Lana Clayton also is charged with malicious tampering with a drug product or food. Jail records did not indicate if she had a lawyer.

No, but they look like the ears of our very own hard working AG, Jeff Sessions.
I hate to tell you all this but you could drink cups of visene with no nasty side effects other than a tummy ache
You are an ignorant fool! Tetrahydrozoline ingestion is extremely serious. Any waiter, waitress or restaurant staff caught doing this could easily spend years behind bars even if the customer just ended up with a “tummy ache”. Its called poisoning people and the authorities consider it a serious crime. I know... I worked with the police on a daily basis for 25 years.
OK, I just Googled it and the results confirmed what I just told you.

People are routinely sent to prison for what you described in post 14. There is absolutely no excuse.
Theyre definitely jug ears.
I am never in doubt and seldom wrong. Just finished a deep dive on Mayo and you are Mr Seldom. I was wrong.
If the jury finds her guilty will they say, "the I's have it".
If only. Many guys are figuring it out.
Already known and out there.
Now the antifreeze in the sweet tea, however,....
If you’re putting this stuff in your eyes, wouldn’t it be bad for you, too?
Who knew it was that easy? Damn!
Modern pharma certainly should be able to come up with test strips to verify poison such as eye drops, antifreeze.
Or if you suddenly get unexpected stomach aches, start saving and testing your food. Send it to a lab.
well done there, golux
Think I saw this on CSI.
How do you do that?
I got food poisoning a few years ago and wanted to have it tested (no foul play; just unwashed salad from the farmer's market) but didn't know where to send it.
I am somewhat skeptical. The LD50 (dose at which half the test subjects die) is 345 mg drug per kg body weight in mice (oral dose); in rats, it is 785 mg/kg. Visine is a 0.05% solution of tetrahydrozoline, which would be 7.5 mg in a 15 mL bottle. If the husband weighed 75 kg (165 lbs), he would have had to consume 25,875 mg, or almost 26 g of the drug. According to my back of the envelope calculations, he would have had to have consumed over 13 gallons of Visine to have reached an LD50. The rate at which tetrahydrozoline is excreted from the body is an unknown, but unless its half life is measured in days or longer, it is highly unlikely that the dose would have reached an LD50 even if she had given him nothing but Visine to drink every day.
I suppose he could have had a bad heart or some other condition that could have been exacerbated by the tetrahydrozoline, but I seriously doubt he was killed by the drug alone.
If anyone wants to see the calculations, I’ll be happy to provide them.
You were not wrong. Please see my reply #37 in this thread. While she could have poisoned him with tetrahydrozoline, she did not do it by putting eye drops in his tea. She would have had to have a supply of the pure chemical to reach lethal doses.
Horrible
