Mattis: Russia's Goal with Poisoning Was to Divide West
RFE/RL ^ | Mar 2018

Russia's poisoning of a former spy in Britain is part of a Kremlin strategy to divide the West by conducting covert operations and then fomenting doubt and disagreement over who's responsible, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has said.

It was part of a pattern seen in Russia's actions, Mattis said, starting in Ukraine in 2014, where he said Moscow sent armed men without insignias into Crimea and has provided fighters and weapons under cover to Ukrainian separatists.

Mattis said Russia's subterfuge continued through covert efforts to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

"They take the insignia off soldiers' uniforms and they go into Crimea. They say they have nothing to do with what's going on with the separatists in eastern Ukraine," Mattis added.

"I'm not sure how they can say that with a straight face," he said, but "they're doing things that they believe are deniable."

"And so they're trying to break the unity of the Western alliance, NATO," he said, by promoting doubt and disputes over who is responsible."

I’m not believing it. Too much stuff, like the Steele dossier, has England’s hand all over it.

No telling. The only thing certain is that Pat’s response would involve the Jews in some way.

Mattis is a fool if he believes this. Russia didn’t poison Skripal. If he doesn’t belive it and is saying this anyway then he is playing chicken with nuclear war as the risk. Is all of DC stark raving mad?

What if it (the dossier) has Russia’s hand on it too?

What if Russia did poison someone (no clue)

I would think the most likely (psyop) strategy for the russkis is to be active on multiple fronts, with fingers in as many pies as possible to sow doubt, discord, confusion. Targeted ads on facebook? Why not? The occasional assassination here and there? Sure. Trolls on FR and any other prominent conservative or liberal site? Go for it.

Makes perfect sense if their goal is to reduce the USA to a state of total dysfunction, where everyone suspects everyone else, and the varying factions are at each other’s metaphorical throats. What better way to take down the imperialist capitalist agreesors, eh?

Mattis is a fool if he believes this.

You prove his point. The intention behind Putin's random acts of KGB Christian kindness: doubt, discord, and an increased hatred for the West, your own civilization. Who needs Muslims when enough Americans and Europeans give up on the West to leech on Kremlin lies.

For the record, it wasn't just Teresa May & co who vouched for this account, but UK patriot Boris Johnson who has since resigned over Brexit fallout. Johnson referred to Putin as a'malign and disruptive force in the world.'

Mattis is reaching here.

But it’s apparent he put a lot of effort into a logical construct...that makes no sense whatsoever.

However, it gives the despicable Neocons something to hold onto. And allows them to remain stupid and evil.

“it wasn’t just Teresa May & co who vouched for this account, but UK patriot Boris Johnson”

Everyone in the UK government got their information from MI6/MI5. Universally.

It’s a single source, with dubious affinity.

UK has never provided a sample to any outside agency. In fact, when Russia made a request to get a sample (as is their right under the Chemical Weapons Treaty), UK refused to even acknowledge the request was made.

Agree, I thought Mattis was gonna be a new kinda guy. Turns out he is the same old lying Neocon weasel. Still waiting for the next false flag by these swamp dwellers.

British Mi6 is filled with Soviet deep state sympathizers. That Steele dossier making out democrats to be enemies of the Kremlin is obviously a Soviet ploy to distance their Kremlin penetrated democrats from Putin

And the US is any better? I have no reason to believe anything but “we’re all pawns in their game” and that it’s a game all countries play.

I’m disappointed that President Trump didn’t see through it. If he did, we would’ve been out of Syria (including those dang contractors) by now.

Of course. This pattern goes as far back as the 50’s and 60’s. Set the blacks against the whites, for example. Particularly now that this is their best remaining useable card, dividing and weakening the West is now essential...

That’s an interesting question. Honestly, I think that at one time, we actually did *try* to be better. However, those days are over, and perhaps long since over.

There was a time in history when we tried to spread “democracy” and freedom, to liberate the oppressed, and so on and so forth. Back in the 1940s, we could have done much, much worse things than we actually did. When it was all over, we helped rebuild our former enemies and tried to make them our friends. Perhaps we did that a little too well.

All that aside, the world is a different place now, and as you’ve noted, it is a game that all countries play. Looking at it, I think that in the past, we were naive, wrapped up in our own self-righteousness. We believed our own propaganda, and years later, in the middle eastern deserts, it came back to bite us on the behind.

The world has changed, and we can no longer count on the strengths that we once had as a nation and society. Looking at it, the war on America has been going on for over 100 years, and we were just too free and prosperous to notice it.

Like the proverbial frog in the pot, we’ve enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub, and now, it might just be too late to hop out. President Trump is the symbol and representative of the people’s attempt to jump out of the pot.

Will he/we succeed? Honestly, and sadly, I don’t think so. Primarily, because our enemies (and Russia) are using the forces of corrupted human nature to destroy us, including our own national pride and conceit.

The seeds have already been planted, and nurtured. They are growing quickly, and will eventually bear their destructive fruit. At this point, the destruction is all but guaranteed, because one way or another, the America that we knew will be gone. Either buried under a wave of failed socialism, and all that, or under a mountain of regret.

Because at this point, what it will really take would make General Sherman blush. One need only look at history to see that there really is nothing new under the sun, and human nature is no different now than it was 3000 years ago. Thucydides wrote that “The strong will do what they will, the weak will suffer what they must.” In the end, that’s all it comes down to.

We, as nation have laid our strength aside in the pursuit of materialism and pleasure. We’ve set it aside and replaced it with the weakness that comes after gorging at a feast. All we are lacking is the writing on the wall, and perhaps even that is there for all to see.

Mene mene, tekel upharsin and all that.

We shall see.

That's a real fine analysis about the juncture that civilization faces.

Going back to the height of the Roman Empire (probably even further), every 500 years or so (give or take a century) a major shift occurs. 1492 until about 2000 (maybe 911?) was the Golden Age of Western Civilization. I fear we're at the beginning of that next phase, decline and horrific outcomes until something else emerges, but it will be awhile.

The good news is pockets of civilization do survive. Even if President Trump's mission does fail, perhaps his gift is a slowing down of the process, so those so inclined can prepare for what lies ahead.

Maybe it is Islamic Russia, they are much further down that road than the UK.
