FULL TITLE: Fifth-grade boy is made to write 'ma'am' repeatedly as punishment for calling his teacher by the term of respect after she asked him not to

A fifth-grade boy has been punished for calling his teacher 'ma'am' after she asked him not to use the term of respect.

Student Tamarion Wilson, 10, was made to write out the word 'ma'am' repeatedly during class on Tuesday at North East Carolina Preparatory School in Tarboro, North Carolina.

His mother Teretha Wilson was shocked when he returned home from the public charter school with the sheet of paper, for her to sign in order to complete the punishment.

'I asked him what happened. He said he got in trouble for saying "yes ma'am",' the mother told ABC 11.

I am a teacher and I find this story appalling. I teach in a district in the south and every child is EXPECTED to use sir & ma’am.

What I don’t understand is your being so disrespectful to your children’s teachers. To not address them first as you boasted is not the way to model for your children or build a positive relationship with the teacher. In all my years of teaching I have never been in a position where the parent & I could not work thru any issue. By all means a parent should go to the principal immediately if you are unhappy about what is happening and talking with the teacher did not immediately resolve the issue.

It is bizarre to me that you would treat an adult like that. And by the way when a parent came to me about a situation where I thought the teacher to be completely in the wrong I told her to go to the principal and if the problem still did not stop to go to the superintendent.

When I was in school in Florida in the early 60’s, you had damn well better say ma’am & sir. Further, if a girl was to be next to you in the cafeteria, you had better pull her chair out for her.

Uh, be careful and get even if possible.

Back long ago when I was a practicing lawyer held in contempt by an alleged, professed lesbian judge, I fufilled her punishment of a $100 donation to a charity.

Because she wanted to embarrass me, she had me present the receipt in open court and you should have seen her face when I presented the receipt from a pro-life pregnancy assist center. Hehe.

Maybe instead of “Yes, ma’am”, he shoulda said “Yo! Ho! Dat da fact”?

He’d probably be given student of the year award in most schools nowadays.

“Dog whistle”

I assume you’re referring to the wolf whistle that some men whistle want to see a woman walk by. the origins of that whistle is known as a bosun pipe call from the naval services back in the days when the bosun pipe told the crew what evolution was occurring. They had pipes for everything they had pipe for revellie, they had pipes for meals, or All Hands muster, and a host of other calls but the pipe or what is sometimes called a wolf whistle was actually a pipe when in Port. Since the ships crew lived aboard, a pipe was sounded to indicate that there were female visitors onboard. Which meant the crew had to exercise some dress code in order to not embarrass the ladies who were on board for a visit, perhaps a tour, perhaps visiting the captain Etc.

What do you expect, liberalism has gone off the extreme left end of the political spectrum and now destroying this country.

Here's a disgusting quote from Senator Barbara Boxer to then Brig. Gen. Michael Walsh of the Army Corps of Engineers when he appeared before the Senate back in 2009 and responded to her respectfully as "Yes Ma'am".....

"“Do me a favor, can you say ‘senator’ instead of ‘ma’am’?” Mrs. Boxer pointedly asked the general. “It’s just a thing. I worked so hard to get that title, so I’d appreciate it. Thank you.”

An elected POS dressing down a career military Army General is beyond the pale of acceptance and civility...........

Reminds me of when I was in 4th grade. The teacher was strict, yet calm and kind nature, so I thought, or at least until Sheila, a new girl, an army brat, who previously lived in Kansas, joined the class. The teacher introduced her to the class and then asked her a question something like, “So, Sheila, you used to live in Kansas.” Sheila answered, “Yes, ma’am, I used to live in Kansas.” Uh, oh! The teacher, Miss D., who was an older, unmarried woman, who my aunt had had for her 4th grade teacher 12 years previously and who was a woman that at some point in time might have been referred to as a spinster or a biddy, suddenly became enraged. She shrieked “What did you call me?” Sheila, looking scared and confused answered something like “Ma’am. I called you ma’am, ma’am.” Miss D. “How dare you? Don’t you ever call me or anyone else ma’am that is rude and sounds like you are sassing me. I won’t stand for it.” Wow! We all sat there wondering where did this come from. I could see if it was one of us Yankee kids saying “Yes, ma’am.” but a kid from Kansas, where this was probably polite, how would she know (we were rude) didn’t use such terminology. Sheila, said something like “Sorry, I didn’t know I’m not suppose to say ma’am. Where I lived in Kansas, I would be in trouble if I didn’t say “Yes, ma’am.” Miss D: “Well you don’t live there anymore. You live here and you are going to learn to do things the right way.” Wow! I’m sitting there thinking thinking ????? Why did the teach over react and why is this rude? I still don’t get it. Sheila moved away about a year later, but I still remember this moment and how sad I felt for her.

of course if us, Yankee kids, had called Ms. Dee, ma’am, it would have been to sass her, but obviously a kid from somewhere else had been taught it was a form of respect and didn’t deserve the reaction she got from the teacher all those years ago.

“public charter school”

No different than just “public school”, so why should ANY PARENT expect better?

I bet that the school makes a big deal about not bullying ...while their teacher is a bully.

He’s no longer in her class. Next time he sees her in the hallway I hope he bumps into her and goes out of the way to say “excuse me ma’am”.

My mother told me she had a similar instance back in the 1920’s (her grammar school years). Said her teacher accused her of mispelling her own name and made her write it the incorrect way on the board 100 times after school.

So happens her name has an extra 2 letters on the end and is a derivation of a common name. Her mother was incensed at the teacher on finding out and cussed her out publicly.
