MADRID (AP) Spains center-left government approved legal amendments Friday to make sure that the remains of former dictator Gen. Francisco Franco will be dug up and removed from a controversial national mausoleum honoring the nations civil war dead.
The minority Socialist government is certain that parliament will endorse the amendments, probably in a debate next month, deputy prime minister Carmen Calvo told reporters.
The amendments to Spains Historical Memory Law of 2007 grant the government the power to exhume Francos body. That change aims to thwart legal efforts by Francos descendants and supporters to block the exhumation in the courts.

The Corpse Synod! I work in the law and for years I had dozens of prints of great moments in legal history on my office walls.
The black and white version of that image was one of them.Im a Catholic but Ill readily concede that wasnt one of our best moments
LOL, post of the day.
LOL.........
OMG, that was one of my favorites........Our-ra top storey tonight.......LOL
Franco saved Spain from communism, kept Spain out of WWII, and maintained Spain as a Muslim-free zone.
Today’s Spaniards are losing it. They’re taking in African muzzie migrants that the Italians managed to turn away. Spain started going socialist in 1981 and it’s been downhill ever since. How long before King Juan Carlos is deposed?
Winner’s curse?
Where Franco is buried lay the souls of both the Republicans (the Marxists) and those of the Nationlists on Francos side. That cemetery is much like our Arlington Cemetery where the souls of both Union and Confederates lay in the same ground, once again brothers in arms though they tried to kill each other during the war. Those two cemeteries are symbols of healing between once enemies. To remove Franco from that sacred place in Spain is not right.
It should be noted that the crimes of the Nationalists were great. The crimes of the Republican were the equal. Oddly many of the crimes of the Republicans were against other Republicans of a slightly different stripe in an internal struggle for power in the war.
Franco saved Spain from communism. Juan Carlos saved Spain from Franco after his death. Juan Carlos is a man to be admired. After Franco Juan Carlos was king of Spain. He instituted democracy, although he had supreme power as King of Spain. The military rebelled. Juan Carlos addressed the parliment of Spain and said this will not stand. The military stood down. The Generals were but young officers or enlisted during the Spanish Revolution. They knew full well Spain was on the cusp of a new revolution. They well remembered the horror and stood down.
If Juan Carlos had of failed he would at best been in prison but most likely dead.
Juan Carlos is a man to be admired.
I forgot to add this. If one wants to really understand the Spanish Revolution, one must read George Orwells, “Letters from Catalonia.” Oddly he fought for the Marxists Republicans. When he came back from Spain he was no longer a Marxist. He was injured and the bullet came from other Republicans and not Franco’s Nationalists.
A bullet to ones body makes one reassess political beliefs.
***Franco saved Spain from communism. Juan Carlos saved Spain from Franco after his death. Juan Carlos is a man to be admired. After Franco Juan Carlos was king of Spain.***
I remember when Franco chose Juan Carlos as the next King of Spain. The US Press hooted, hollered and laughed about Franco choosing a wet-behind-the-ears untried kid. I still remember one cartoon showing Franco holding up a diapered baby labeled Juan Carlos.
But than what can you expect from the US press.
King Juan Carlos abdicated in 2014. Felipe VI is the present king.
