IRON TOWN, Utah -- An elderly couple in southern Utah shot an intruder, but the fight didnt stop there.
Investigators say the man then stripped naked and confronted deputies.
Iron Town is a very small community just west of Cedar City.
Barbed wire fences and no trespassing signs greet the few visitors that venture that way.
Really, really quiet," resident Walter Enz said. "Nice.
But it wasn't quiet on Tuesday.
I saw the sheriff deputy come up on a pickup and he was coming at me like he was shot out of a cannon," Enz said.
The Iron County Sheriff's Office had received a call for a burglary in process in Iron Town.
Deputies say 24-year-old Christian Holbert kicked down the door of the house and confronted the couple inside.
They are a little bit elderly, they do have some disabilities," Lt. Del Schlosser said.
Elderly but not defenseless.
A sign at the home reads, "Smith and Wesson spoken here."
They did fear for their lives and they did shoot at him," Lt. Schlosser said.
After being shot several times, investigators say Holbert stripped naked, walked out of the home and confronted four deputies.
Taser was used multiple times" Lt. Schlosser said. "He did not respond to that but the deputies were able to subdue him.
After a medical helicopter took Holbert to Dixie Regional Medical Center in serious condition, Iron Town returned to quiet.
Things happen and you just have to hope they dont happen to you," Enz said.
The homeowners were not hurt, and deputies say they were within their rights to defend their lives.
Investigators think Holbert was on some kind of drugs that allowed him to keep going despite being shot and tased.
Drop the Glock and get a 1911.
Yep, and it's clear that no editor got within 100 yards of this story. I especially like the bit about how difficult it apparently was to get the investigators to say what happened, but they eventually spoke up after they were shot several times:
"After being shot several times, investigators say Holbert stripped naked, walked out of the home and confronted four deputies."
Being an investigator in the wilds of Utah seems to be a tough way to make a living.
Ruthless People?
Stupid is supposed to hurt.

This is TV journalism at its best.
If you take a journalism school dropout from the junior college - he is still overqualified for a news reporting job at your average TV station.
“got legal advice that said don’t ever put signs like this up. It implies that you are eager to shoot someone. The DA could decide to prosecute you based on that”
I have read that you should only use weapons right out of the box, don’t do any work that will enhance the weapon because that has been used in court to convict based on the fact that you and your hotrod defense gear were proof of gunslinger mentality and thereby were itching to take a shot at something... Same goes for exotic ammunition.
Most LEO’s use out of the box gear as well because of court cases that have gone against them for using enhanced weaponry.
However, if you think about it there is really no need to get too fancified because most stuff coming out of the box these days has already been accessorized or accuratized or are ergonomically corrected to outperform the old out of the box stock stuff you that used to be purchased OTC.
I know a coin and precious metals dealer who told me that there’s even cases out there where people at numismatic shows have been robbed and they put ink bombs in the bags of coins that were being stolen and they were taken to court because they had put an explosive device in there and we’re being charged with some kind of an assault with a deadly weapon charge... So it’s a legal wrangling mess out there when it comes to any kind of defense that you might have. I remember reading (I think it was Ayoob Mossad) who once said that “every bullet has a lawyer attached to it”, and he’s right.
“My philosophy is never advertise you have guns”
There’s an Asian martial arts quote floating around out there that goes something like “weapons should be felt and not seen.”
I concur.
I also speak 1911, having bought one on the centennial of its adoption by the Army. After all, what else could a patriotic American do? ;-) I just prefer the greater magazine depth of the Glock and my M&P.
