Popular music icon Elvis Presley dies in Memphis, Tennessee. He was 42. The death of the “King of Rock and Roll” brought legions of mourning fans to Graceland, his mansion in Memphis. Doctors said he died of a heart attack, likely brought on by his addiction to prescription barbiturates.

Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jesse, died during the birth. Elvis grew up dirt-poor in Tupelo and Memphis and found work as a truck driver after high school. When he was 19, he walked into a Memphis recording studio and paid $4 to record a few songs as a present to his mother. Sam Philips, the owner of the studio, was intrigued by the rough, soulful quality of his voice and invited Presley back to practice with some local musicians. After Philips heard Elvis sing the rhythm-and-blues song “That’s All Right,” which Presley imbued with an accessible country-and-western flavor, he agreed to release the rendition as a single on his Sun Records label. The recording went to the top of the local charts, and Presley’s career was launched.

No I haven’t seen it. But, thanks! It looks like a hoot, the kind of stuff I enjoy. I will track it down for sure and let you know my thoughts.

I was filling my car with at a gas station in Pismo Beach, CA. when I heard the news....wasnt such a fan of his...but now I realize how talented a singer he was....all he needed was a hard headed doc and pharmacist...he needed a big time psych intervention...a shame his friends, coperformers, and family didnt see his life threatening problems. A real waste.

Elvis was the king and there will never be another like him. Bigger than life entertainer. The greatest rock show ever was 1973 Elvis Presley Aloha from Hawaii. If I had a time machine and could be at any concert at anytime in history it would be that show. RIP Elvis Presley.

I remember exactly what I was doing.

Me too. I was working for a house framing crew prior to heading back to college. That day it was about 100 degrees and 90% humidity and my job was to lug 4x8 sheets of plywood up three flights to stairs to hand to the guy who was putting them on the roof. I was dying. Out of the blue, the owner of the home building company drove up and told us work was finished for the day and we should all go home. When we asked why, he said it was because Elvis had just died and it would be disrespectful to continue working under those circumstances. I had never been an Elvis fan until that moment. :-)

I was 11 then, but I don’t remember. My father liked Elvis, but he was probably at sea, and Mom didn’t care. I remember when John Wayne died, though.

Do you know he was killed? No doubt about it. To me.

After listening to some hours of conspiracy radio on subject.

Try it. CoasttoCoastAM fairly recently.

Many many many facts you couldn’t dream of.

When his father got the word, he said so they finally got him.
