It wasn't really a BitCoin problem. Mt. Gox is basically a bank. You can keep your BitCoin in your personal wallet, or you can but it in a BitCoin bank for convenience, but then you expose yourself to an added layer of risk over which you have no control.
As far as I know, BitCoin has never been stolen from a personal wallet short of somebody snagging your encryption key.
