Last year, I wrote a story about Stefan Bellof's 6:11.13 Nürburgring lap time set back in 1983 in a Porsche 956. I said it was a record that would remain unchallenged unless Porsche took its 919 LMP1 car to the 'Ring. That's exactly what it's done. Running a 5:19.55 around the famous Nordschleife, the Porsche 919 Evo driven by Timo Bernhard just obliterated the all-time record.
That's 51.58 seconds faster than Bellof's time, which is almost hard to believe. Onboard footage from Bernhard's lap, which you can see below, doesn't even look like real-life, but it is.
Unlike Bellof's 1983 record, which was set during qualifying for the Nürburgring 1000km, this record saw Porsche rent out the track just for itself with the company using a car not homologated for any race series. The 919 Evo is the same car that beat Lewis Hamilton's 2017 pole at Spa Francorchamps earlier this year. It's basically built to set lap records like this. To send off its three-time Le Mans-winning 919 after it was retired from sports-car racing, Porsche threw out the LMP1 rulebook and made a high-downforce, high-horsepower monster.

Another thing that makes it fast is that it has aerodynamics over the front and rear wheels, not big drag producers with the tires at the top hitting the wind at twice the speed of the car.
The 959 record was set with the track shortened by 2 miles, 14 mi to 12 mi, due to track construction. All the rest of recorded times were on the 14 mi track length. I wonder if the 919 Porsche ran the 12 mi course to make it equal, I bet they did. Still impressive.
Another thing that hurts F1 cars is the open cockpit. That creates tons of turbulence. The F1 cars are light and gave good HP so that helps them. Their drag to downforce ratio sucks compares to a WEC or IMSA Prototype though.
I want to see how a 2018 model Formula One race car does on this same lap. I have my doubts it could beat the 919 Evo’s time, given the higher top speed of the 919 Evo.
The different racing organizations regulate so many things. If you don’t meet regulations you have an avdantage.
I would have guessed the video was playing at double speed. That driver’s concentration and reflexes are incredible.
YYYEEEEEEEEE-HHHHAAAAAWWW!!!!!!!!!
Thatll rip the Chapstick right off Yer Lips, even with the winderz rolled up.
Definitely dont want to be a Bug hitting that windscreen. Get a Headache when your A$$ smacks into the back of the skull.
That was flat-out incredible.
Great video. Thanks for posting.
Did he really memorize the optimal speed and angles for the entire course?
No other vehicles on the track, so zero cues to work with!
Interesting. In 1968 Fords GT40 did 212 on the Mulsanne straight at le Mans.
I’m assuming the speed is being recorded in KPH? 369 top speed.......That’s pretty darn fast
amazing the difference in lines taken
bkmk
So where do you put the groceries?
Thats 368 kph, which is 228 mph. Pretty damn fast, in any language!
Now Alonso can go mess up some other series/team.
He’ll NOT be missed by me.
Unfortunately, there's only room for about 1 bag. So you have to make several trips back and forth. But since the car moves so darn fast, it still takes less time than the standard family car to complete the job.
