A 4-year-old Manchester boy is being called a hero after his grandmother stopped breathing on Tuesday and he called 911.

Max Velez is being credited with saving her life, and this week, he was recognized for his actions.

“I'm so proud because he's really shy, and I guess he was calm the whole situation,” said Fallon Clarke, Max’s mother.

While Clarke was at work, he was home with his grandmother when she had a medical emergency.

“Really extreme – she couldn't breathe,” Clarke said. “She couldn't get up, so really, Max handled the whole situation, they said.”

Max said he called 911, then got to go in a firetruck when first responders arrived.

He did everything right, his mother said – from putting the dog in its crate, to answering the door for the first responders, to handing them his grandmother’s inhaler.

“I got there, and the police (officer) was like, ‘You know, your son saved your mom's life,’” Clarke said. “We've practiced in the past. I try and talk to him about emergencies and strangers, so he knows what 911 stands for.”

Max has been visiting his grandmother at Elliot Hospital, where she's being treated for pneumonia.

Hospital staff honored Max with presents and an award for his quick thinking.

“When we finally left the hospital, he's like, 'I don't want to go with you. Can I go back in the firetruck?'” Clarke said. “I'm like, 'No, that's not, like, a natural occurrence.'”

Clarke said her mother should be released from the hospital soon.
