Any comments are additional information from knowledgeable folks would be most appreciated. "Coach guns" are going for quite a bit of money these days, so their popularity is returning for some reason. I kept my cost down by finding functioning off-brand 12ga double and modifying with the help of friend with the proper equipment a bottle of water. Have at it.

Sawed-off shotguns are illegal in some states (California), so it depends.

Cowboy Action Shooting. Used to be you could pick up a nice short-barreled double for a song. Now it's a song plus about three hundred buckadingdongs.

>>But, in the case of a home invasion or someone trying to carjack you and you can get your hands on it, it is the perfect weapon.

How big do you think the pattern is at the length of the longest hallway in your home?

My father had one he kept down under the seat of the truck. Rural North Mississippi. That man always brought some different kind of gun every week

If you are going to shoot magnum shells out of it, make sure you put a pistol grip forend on it, because missing that extra weight on the front end makes the barrel rise so hard that it’s difficult to maintain a grip on it, especially if your hands are sweaty.

Good modification if it’s intended use his personal defense. Mostly because it gives the user better mobility. It won’t hurt your ballistics or do anything to your accuracy if you were starting with a cylinder bore.

I had a short barrelled Franchi. It could be converted to either pump or auto. I can’t recall the model name right off hand.

It felt a little crude in the hand. It had a cylinder choke or lack of choke. I think it was 18 inches. To my surprise it shot very well at the skeet range. I did about as well with it as I did my Beretta skeet gun.

I particularly like the short barreled side by side hammer-less with ejectors. The lack of a pump or auto action makes them a lot shorter overall.

May I suggest a Mossberg Shockwave 12 ga pump which comes with a 14” barrel. It carries load of 5+1 of 2-3/4” or 8+1 of 1-3/4” Aguila Mini Shells. Purchase off the shelf with no modifications needed.

To all of us who know guns, if faced with a double-barreled 12ga at close range, and upon being informed it has 00 Buck in it, one tends to find a way to de-escalate that disagreement or run like hell.

Informed? Nope, that is contrary to Tuco's Wisdom:

“When you have to shoot, shoot! Don’t talk!”

An old side by side is a more than adequate home defense weapon if you’re on a budget. if cutting you’re own I read cutting each barrel at a slight angle will widin you shot pattern.

If a mob is rushing you you can hit multiple targets with one shot given the shell load.

As you probably know and other posts tend to indicate, there may be problems depending on where you live, overall length etc.
As I am not a shyster, I furnish no advice and you are capable of Googling the rest.

Canada:Sawing off a shotgun can mean serious prison time – but loophole allows new shotguns with 8.5-inch barrels

In the United States, it is illegal to posses a sawed off shotgun that has a barrel length of less than eighteen inches, unless the individual has obtained a taxed permit from the ATF. That permit requires a background check and payment of an excise tax for that weapon. However, each state has different laws which govern the types of weapons that residents are allowed to own and a state may forbid ownership of a sawed off shotgun, simply because of the ease with which it can be conceale
