The 60s wasn’t that long ago but you do have a point. Look who’s breeding(and probably inbreeding) them today. Thugs mostly.
My uncle (back in the 60’s) had a Cocker Spaniel that was the best dog ever. She was fantastic with kids. You could do anything and she would not react.
He wanted to get another one when she passed, but by even then the breed had been ruined and they were becoming short tempered and nippy due to inbreeding and poor breeding.
So that breed has been ruined that way as well in just as many years.
