Survey: Pet Owners Happier, Wealthier, More Fit Than Non-Owners

LONDON — If you think pets are the pits, you may not be living to your potential. A new survey finds that people who own pets are happier, earn more money, and exercise more frequently than those who don’t.

In a poll of 1,000 British dog and cat owners over 55 and 1,000 people in the same age group who don’t have any pets, researchers calculated that pet owners were twice as likely to consider themselves a success. In fact, 9 in 10 owners agreed that their furry family members were good for their health and well-being. The belief makes sense: the survey showed that pet owners log nearly twice as much exercise, getting a good sweat about five times per week, versus just three time a week for the non-owners.

In contrast to the ugliness of the daily dog bite threads.

Dogs are the best; including Pit Bulls and the other bully breeds. People on the other hand can really suck.

I can see why the horse owners are more fit and healthy. And the dog owners. And of course the snake owners, cause you’d better find him if he gets out. But why would a cat owner be fitter?

Great care has to be used in a study like this.

First, respondents have to be stratified in quintiles by income. Then ask equal numbers of pet owners, previous pet owners and never pet owners from the highest 20% of income. Sub divide by age, seniors here vs. millennials. Repeat for other income groups. I bet indications disappear.

I recently started identifying as both the owner and the dog, and I can bench 40 more pounds. Could swear my binky got bigger too.

I can attest to the fact that my high-strung Golden Retriever puts me through a workout several times a day, every day. I can’t see how that makes me happier though. I love him to death, but he’s gonna eventually tear my arm off of my torso while chasing a rabbit, cat, or squirrel. It’s just a matter of time.

My Black Lab is the same. In addition to that, he “demands” that we play several times per day either throwing the tennis ball so he can chase it and then yanking it out of his mouth so he can go chase it again or having a tug o’ war with one of various chew toys. I wouldn’t trade my little buddy for anything.

Yep, I enjoy going fishing or hiking with my dogs almost every day. They are the best.

SURVEY:

People that get paid to do surveys like this are SMARTER and HAPPIER then the average pet owners who respond to the survey

Well, I do spend a good bit of time socializing with my cats when I first get up. Only beings I do interact with for the most part. Wife gets up and then I have to start listening to her, instead of just reacting to little ones.

from chasing the cat to get your keys back to crawling under houses to get the cat to come in...it’s like the USMC obstacle course...the Cat is gonna “make you pay” to get them.

Yes, I thought pet owners were better off, too. Then my Black Mamba bit me...

Yes; I should have included cats in my personal comment. Although I personally never had one due to having dogs that weren’t socialized to them; I’ve had many friends with them. They seem to like me as well as the dogs.

Never did get the snake-as-a-pet thing personally but different strokes and all that...

I guess they can show affection in their own slithery way. Mice and birds do. Although if I were a bird; I’d be pissed off about spending my life in a cage with my wings clipped.

A survey like this indulges in what is called pre selection bias. If you own a pet you have a discretionary cost right off the start so of course your chances of being better off is higher. And the opposite applies as well. Dog walking is a physical activity so obviously more healthy than say playing a video game. This falls into the captain obvious category.

But nobody is talking about my significantly larger binky.

How could you not?

I mean...it’s my binky. Why would you not care about it...?
