Republican reeling vs. Manchin in key Senate race
Politico ^ | August 9, 2018

Patrick Morrisey is leaning on the president to turn around his campaign against the incumbent Democrat.

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Republicans can't seem to figure out how to beat Joe Manchin.

On paper, Manchin should be an easy mark in November: an incumbent Democrat in a state where President Donald Trump won two-thirds of the vote in 2016 and remains overwhelmingly popular. Yet Manchin holds a comfortable lead in public and private polling, and interviews with multiple Republican operatives involved in or closely following the race indicate it has slipped out of the top tier of Senate contests.

Republicans are worried that Manchin's opponent, state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, has failed to close the gap since he emerged from a nasty primary in May. Morrisey has been blistered by ads from Democrats but has yet to hit the airwaves himself during the general election, and has less than $900,000 in the bank compared to Manchin's $6.2 million war chest.

So Manchin hasn't done anything bad enough to be fired?

This just figures doesn’t it? Incompetent Republicans. The state loves Trump and this guy hasn’t raised any money.

$900,000? There were individual bundlers who raised more than that by themselves for Cruz in 2016. Pathetic. I raised over $40,000 for the late Fred Thompson in 2008 and over $18,000 for Cruz in 2016 with bad health. I’m no professional fundraiser and I’ve barely ever been inside of a country club.

Well, Manchin was the liberals go-to guy to sell gun control to conservative states. He tried to soften the face of gun control legislation.

If the republican opponent is not doing well, he has not done a good job of projecting Manchin as Chuck Schumer's boy.

West Virginia is coal country. Manchin helping the democrats to win the senate majority is bad for coal miners. Keep telling the voters that electing Manchin is helping the democrats win majority, which is bad for the coal mining industry. We all saw what happened the last time the democrats had majority. If the republican cannot hammer this message, then I don't know.

The DNC is a machine. They march in lock-step, are organized beyond words, and have few if any dissenters among the ranks. They use every tool at their disposal. They can put a protest or demonstration together at minute’s notice. They absolutely control the streets. The GOP cannot get anything together like the Dems. The dems take to the streets, own the education system, and are fearless adversaries; the GOP are feckless losers.

It would be a huge upset if Manchin were to lose. I don't see it happening. I think President Trump should have put pressure on Manchin to switch parties. Maybe after this election.

President Trump is in a tough position. He needs Manchin's support now. And then if Manchin wins, President Trump will still need his support. The chances of Manchin losing are slim. Pragmatically President Trump has to walk a fine line. The crux of that matter is that Manchin is more conservative and suppotive of the President than almost every other "D" in the Senate, and half of the "R"s for that matter.

Joe’s ace in the hole is healthcare: Obamacare’a coverage of pre-existing conditions (except smoking).
McCain saved Manchin.

Unless he does more than the Ohio rally did, Trump can’t overcome these Dumbasses. His influence might have given Baldy a couple of points in a dead even race, our guy is going to need a hell of a lot more than that.
