Dear son,
You're still young. Young enough to decide what you want to do with your life with all options on the table. Your life will be your own. Your choices your own. I'm only here to offer my advice, my guidance.
As such, I beg you, please never become a police officer. Allow me to explain.
When I was a young boy, I held police officers in such high regard that, as corny as it was, I would actually stop and stand at attention and salute them whenever they rolled by in their patrol cars in Rahway. When they didn't notice, I didn't feel bad. They were busy with very important work to do. When they occasionally would smile and salute back, I was thrilled. Because these were the heroes. These were the people who put themselves at risk every single day not for a paycheck, they could make more money doing something else as my father always made sure I knew, but because they had a higher calling. They cared about us.
Please don't become one of them, son.
I still feel the same way. In fact as I grew up and had a family of my own, my respect for them and understanding of their sacrifice only grew stronger. The problem is, more and more people don't feel this way, son. More and more people in the United States have turned our police into the enemy. People have decided the problem isn't thugs and crime and disrespect and non-compliance. They've decided the problem is the police.

You can get hit by a car walking across the street so if your passion is law enforcement then do it. If you wind up in a corrupt precinct report it and MOVE!
My GF’s son went two years to community college to get an associates degree in Criminal Justice with the intention of joining the local police force.
Two years of media exposure to the insanity of today’s police work led him to join the Air Force instead. He’s training a an aircraft mechanic at this moment.
I would not only agree with this, but extend it to the military as well, but for different reasons.
(Disclaimer: served 20 years in the Navy most of which was in recruiting.)
Ick.
Don’t grow up in New Jersey.
The cops are the only ones there who don’t have to look over their shoulder any time they do anything.
What a stinking sh!thole.
Raises a strong point. Who in their right mind would want to do this job in the current environment?
This attitude guarantees fewer good cops.
Cop haters should go look at some actual statistics.
Because Trump is president and the atmosphere is changing. Rule of law is coming back. Slowly but surely.
If you spent most of your 20 years in the Navy as a recruiter, then you weren’t really in the Navy like those of us that sailed the oceans for months at a time. LOL
My primary objection to modern law enforcement is they no longer do that thing as their primary occupation.
REVENUE ENHANCEMENT is their primary directive, not public safety.
.. I have pulled dead, mangled bodies from cars..
I have lied to people as they were dying.
I said you are going to be fine as I held their hand and watched the life fade out.
I have held dying babies. Bought lunch for people who were mentally ill and haven’t eaten in a while.
I have had people try to stab me. Fought with men trying to shoot me.
Been attacked by women who have had the shit kicked out of them by their husband as I was arresting him.
I have held towels on bullet wounds.
Done CPR when I knew it wouldn’t help just to make family members feel better.
I have torn down doors, fought in drug houses. Chased fugitives though tenant buildings.
I have been in high speed car chases.
Foot chases across streets during rush hour traffic.
Been squeezing the trigger about to kill a man when they came to their senses and stopped. Waded through large angry crowds by myself. Drove like a mad man to help a fellow officer. Let little kids who don’t have much sit in my patrol car and pretend they are a cop for their birthday.
I have taken a lot of people to jail. Given many breaks. Prayed for people I don’t even know. Yes and at times I have been “violent” when I had to be. I have been kind when I could..
I admit I have drove to some dark place and cried by myself when I was overwhelmed.
I have missed Christmas and other holidays more than I wanted too.
Every cop I know has done all these things and more for lousy pay, shitty hours and a short life expectancy. We don’t want your pity, I don’t care for your respect. Just let us do our jobs without killing us.. please.
Thank you..

Hey, it was a rough job, but someone had to it. It gets worse. I spent 4 years on sea duty, went to recruiting, got out, then came back in as a Naval Reserve recruiter (active duty reservist). I spent 16 years in my hometown, with full active duty retirement benefits. And I can’t argue with you; I was not in the real Navy. When someone in my command got all gung ho about the Navy I would ask them if they liked it so much why weren’t they in it.
I like just about all of that, but I disagree with the lousy pay part. Lots of 55 year old cops retired and living and golfing in Florida everyday with excellent benefits that over their lifetime would be considered rich.
God bless you for being there no matter what.
Proud daughter of wonderful policemen...my father, my brother, my uncle, and my grandfathers.
I pray for your safety daily.
So... recommending a career as a struggling rap artist who is finally getting his life together, instead?
I would never want to do it in an urban environment but most of the LEOs out there don't work in the third world crap holes we call the inner city.
Just stay out of the big blue dem cities and you can have a rewarding career, make a difference and not a bad retirement. The Border Patrol is a good choice.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your service.
Exaggeration.
My youngest son will be starting his Criminal Justice degree in the fall. There’s a crying need for LEOs in our small town, and he wants to stay local. He’s conservative, smart, and I believe he will be one of the good ones.
