FULL TITLE: Train-loving toddler, 3, killed by freight train after he and his two-year-old sister sneaked away from home and went to the railroad tracks

An Indiana family has been left devastated after their three-year-old son and his two-year-old sister were hit by a freight train after sneaking out of their home.

Caleb Wilson was killed on impact when he was struck by the train around 9.30am on Tuesday. His sister Ellie was hospitalized in critical condition.

The children's parents have been identified as Kelsey Benson and Jacob Wilson.

And may God comfort the engineer - what a dreadful thing to have to live with, and not his fault at all.

The family tells me that when I was three, I got out of the house and wandered along a country road with two big dogs on either side of me, protecting me. A neighbor down the road saw me and loaded me in the car and drove me and the dogs home. My mother apparently thought someone else in the family was watching me while she did some chores.

I found my 3-year old son about 4 blocks away after crossing Mission Street (!, for those who know it) in San Francisco with his best friend, Pedro, both of them on what was called a “Big Wheel,” a first generation plastic toddler bicycle owned by Pedro. Pedro’s sister called me because she didn’t see him around and she knew he would be at our house.

I had two other kids, I was making dinner, and I didn’t even know my son could open the back gate. In fact, I’m still not sure how he did it...He doesn’t know either.

They got back safe, but it’s sure a miracle. However, in those days, there were people who would notice a couple of small children peddling along the street by themselves, and actually several people had helped them and had come back to the house (thank goodness he knew where it was!) with the boys.

But boys are like that. And girls too. It’s hard to block off all the exits.

Amen. When my son was four he was found half a mile away on our dual road by a neighbor. It happens. Unless something more than the suppositions stated in this thread come out, I’m inclined to just grieve for these poeple’s Horrible loss.

I don't wish to excuse the possible negligence of the parents in this case, however there is something everyone should be aware of.

I've watched several of Jordan Peterson's videos and find myself adjusting my expectations about the general population.

Peterson points out that approximately ten percent of the population has an IQ of less than 83. Studies have shown that such people are not allowed in the military because there is no job they can do which has a net positive effect, despite training, coaching, supervision, or any other forms of reward, punishment, or guidance.

If you apply that knowledge to the task of raising children, I think you can only conclude that it is almost a miracle that trains aren't running over children every single day.

The change in my thinking that this fact has brought about is that there are going to be some problems in our society which simply CAN'T be solved, short of some sort of Orwellian sorting or filtering. Given the reality of some people's cognitive shortcomings, I think we are doing amazingly well.

Peterson points out that success in life is highly correlated to IQ and conscientiousness. Perhaps this sad case is not a lack of IQ but a lack of conscientiousness. Either way, there is probably little we can do to eliminate such tragedies.

No, we weren’t drug addled at the time, although we were frazzled.

I can imagine. To this day our Mom would tell you on a good day my brother and I were a "handful" On other days we were an 'unholy terror" We were just a pair of healthy boys. She and our father's nerves were frazzle too till we grew up and left home(Even after.)

That's why I can tend to give these parents the benefit of the doubt... til proved otherwise.

I remember Big Wheels well. A definite kiddyie craze of 25 to 30 years ago.

One of my favorite photos is of one kid screaming down the drive way on his Big Wheels into a puddle at the bottom, setting up a bow-wave wall of water. He was really happy, until 15 seconds later when he realized he was cold and wet, and started blubbering (got that on film, too).

I used to joke that they try all these different ways to kill themselves until they’re about 4 or so. Then they do stupid things for another 15 or 20 years, but not as overtly nuts.

My wife remembers zooming out under our playset monkey bars to catch one of the kids who was hanging on by one hand and about to lose it... at around 18 months of age. And I remember when one of them broke a picture and cut his hands, and happily painted with the blood, until we cleaned him up and the antiseptic began to sting.

You know what I mean, I’m sure.

This is so sad! I’m sure the adults frequently said,
“DON’T play around the trains/tracks”

TheSarce (freeper who passed away a few years ago) said NEVER use the word DON’T!

People take the word DON’T and throw it away and then only hear what comes after i.e. PLAY AROUND THE TRAINS/TRACKS.

This comes from something called NLP. When they would say this in training all attendees had stories where they had used the word DON’T and then (one of the stories was...) the kid played on the train tracks.

I trained myself to say DO NOT, or REMEMBER TO STAY AWAY FROM...

However, politically I used it at election time. I tell Democrats... “DON’T forget to vote.” They hear...”FORGET TO VOTE”

I tell republicans to REMEMBER TO VOTE!

Sometimes I go back and check on the dem and they will say, I didn’t vote and you told me to vote!

ehh, not exactly LOL

And with three adults at home, someone should have had an eye on the babies.

Sad, it happens. One time, walking down my street I noticed a 3-year-old boy playing under a neighbor's 4x4 SUV in his driveway. I pulled him out from under, him covered in grease, and brought him to another neighbor several doors down the street because I figured he belonged to them. Rang the bell, showed a guy the kid and he says "Rachel, your boy got out again!'. Bunch of people there, couple with a kid visiting, and no one noticed the boy got out of the house in back and climbed over the fence and wandered down the street. I shuddered to think if my other neighbor jumped into his 4x4 SUV and unknowingly could have run over the kid. I mean, who looks under their car when driving off?

Sounds like my kid who wondered if an electric burner on the stove was hot even if it wasn’t glowing red. So he put his hand on it and found out right quick.

Stoves?

We had a wood stove with a steel ash breaker that was cruved at the end, a bit like a hockey stick.

One of our kids stuck it in the stove coals, moving it around until it was good and hot... and branded one of his brothers with it.

Yes I do understand.

When me and my older brother weren’t contend trying to ‘kill” ourselves or each other, we turned our attention to our little brother and lead him on a “snipe hunt” during Spring Break vacation back in 1976... in Florida...near a tidal backwater outside of St Augustine.

We left our SIX YEAR OLD brother over a hole with a paper bag rattling it while yelling “Here Snipe”....”Here Snipe”....”Here Snipe” After an hour we stopped laughing our asses off and FORGOT ABOUT HIM. God only knows what could have slithered out of the brackish water... or the bushes... or the hole he was leaning over, he might STILL be there... or in the pit of the stomach of a alligator, or washed out to sea had our mother not asked where our little brother was. We quickly lied our asses off and said at the playground near the campgrounds but went back to the hole we left he at. He was mad.... not that we played a terribly dangerous trick on him.... but that he didn’t catch the little yellow bird we called a “snipe”

While I secretly shudder what might have happened, I laugh at his naivete and trust in his big brothers when we tell this tale of a misspent youth at family functions.

To say the least he is not amused and our nieces, nephews and grandchildren sit wide-eyed at us and say “No, you didn’t”! “Yes we did”, youngins “yes we did” and they look at our mother and father(their grandparents) and they just shake their head in unison.

We were baaaaaad brothers!

And we were on first name basis with the local emergency room back in Tennessee well into our late teens. Lost count of how many stitches, broken and disjointed bones and x-rays we had. Too many to remember.

We were baaaaaad brothers!

Polls fluctuate and really ought not to be taken seriously.

Like palm reading. Fun but nobody should invest according to their “ Horoscope”

Sounds like the ‘loyalty’ test... (yes I am old enough to know what a ‘snipe hunt’ is... we used to take the girls on the ‘Strand’ between Coronado and Imperial Beach and go on grunion runs....also good seats for the ‘Submarine Races”)

Lock your wife and dog in the trunk of your car and see who greets you with wet kisses and wagging her tail at you.
