CLEVELAND Jim Brown has spent much of his post-NFL career fighting for social justice and change.
However, the Hall of Fame running back would never kneel during the national anthem.
The 82-year-old Brown, who championed civil rights during his playing career and became an activist in retirement, said Tuesday night that he respects players' rights to do what they want but his preference is they would stand during the "Star Spangled Banner."
"I'll never kneel and I will always respect the flag," said Brown, who spoke before an HBO premiere of "Hard Knocks," which is chronicling the Cleveland Browns in training camp.

Except maybe Mister Brown.
Yeah, he’s obviously a “house negro” and “Jerry Jones puppet”(slander used against Dak Prescott when he refused to kneel)
And yes, it’s “Mr. Brown” to me.
Still the greatest RB of all time. Even Ray Nitschke said tackling Brown was like tackling an oncoming car.
Obviously, he needs some white, liberal cuck to explain to him what it means to be black. Maybe Keith Olberman.
Beautiful. Thank you Mr. Brown.
YOU da MAN!
He appears to be a stand up guy.
Just once I want to see him make it onto that truck in The Dirty Dozen.
“Uncle Tom”
“Coon”
“Sambo”
That is what Jim Brown will be called.
Fox Sports’ Shannon Sharpe will be upset tomorrow on “Undisputed with Skip and Shannon”.

You Don’t Spit Into The Wind
You Don’t Pull The Mask Off The Old Lone Ranger
And You Don’t Mess Around With Jim”
I loved the Richard Pryor routine about Jim Brown...What you gonna do?
Jim Brown has a conservative streak in him.
I remember he endorsed Nixon in 1972.
Jim was the one athlete star who was not aloof and arrogant to the other ordinary fellows riding in the bus. He was friendly, engaging, outgoing, yet humble in spite of his greatness, and greeted me by my nickname. No reverse-racism in that fine young man.
#16. Nice to hear that Jim Brown was a class act, not a clown act. Reminds me of Jesse Owens when I got an award from him a long time ago. A very humble man and proud American.
Glad to see that the “old folk” still have class while the “youngins are just crass”.
Damn right
Excellently Explained, EEE!
At Syracuse, Jim was a four-letter athlete not only in football, but in track (he was fast) and basketball as well. But his best sport of skilled performance was not football; it was lacrosse, in which his performance was stunning.
I was told the story that when his track team came to Alfred (that upstate farm-boy Saxon team was famous, especially in cross-country). Those Alfred boys ragged him so hard that hr picked up a javelin and winged it almost the length of the gridiron, where it finally wound up stuck in the outer wall of the field house.
The boys were pretty silent after that. so I heard.
