China claims to have successfully tested its first hypersonic aircraft

The China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics (CAAA), based in Beijing and part of the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, conducted the first test of the "Starry Sky-2" aircraft last Friday.

Hypersonic vehicles are not simply high-speed -- they travel at least at five times the speed of sound. That's fast enough to travel across the US in around 30 minutes.

According to a CAAA statement released Monday, the Starry Sky-2 reached a top speed of Mach 6 -- six times the speed of sound, or 4,563 miles (7,344 kilometers) per hour.

The test was a "complete success," claimed CAAA, which posted photos of the test launch on social media platform WeChat. "The Starry Sky-2 flight test project was strongly innovative and technically difficult, confronting a number of cutting-edge international technical challenges."

The CAAA did not indicate what the new aircraft or technology would be used for, other than to say they hoped to continue contributing to China's aerospace industry

And let me make a completely WAG, and predict that it looks almost identical to our X-43A hypersonic test aircraft.

This from the country that can’t build a decent high performance jet engine that will run over 200 hours.

Take the claim with a pound of salt.

I’ll believe it when I can get a mini knockoff at Harbor Freight.

It looks amazingly un-airplane-like and remarkably rocket-like. How can CNN tell the difference?

Thanks, free traitors. I hope that $.10 you saved on Chinese made paint brushes is worth building their military at the expense of ours.

... But typically carry only about 3 minutes worth of fuel...

Not sure what the current official record for sustained hypersonic flight is, but it's measured in just a couple-three minutes last I saw.

What you're seeing there is just the outer shell of the boost rocket. The hypersonic aircraft (if it exists) is under the nosecone of the rocket.

I'm guessing that China isn't showing the actual aircraft because either (a) it looks exactly like ours, although it may be somewhat smaller, and is thereby embarrassing, or (b) it's obviously phony, like that stupid "stealth fighter jet" that Iran demonstrated a few years ago, that was so tiny that the human "pilot" couldn't fit into the cockpit.

NASA and the USAF ran a successful test of the Boeing X-51 Waverider in 2013.

It detached from its solid-fuel booster at 3200 mph and accelerated under its own power to 3400 mph, which is a bit more than one mile per second. It flew under power for 210 seconds, and returned telemetry data for 370 seconds of flight.

That flight marked the end of the X-51 program, because Barack Obama felt that we shouldn't have a Waverider until everyone else can have a Waverider.

And they bought it with the money they made off of us thanks to those stupid "free trade" deals.
