Help with tires

Looking to replace my truck's tires.

Background I inherited my truck from by brother-in-law who lifted a GMC Sierra 2500 HD. Tires that are currently equipped are 325-65-18. To replace the 4 tires, I am looking at about $1,400 out the door.

Truck is now mostly city with the occational trail driving, no real off road. So I am happy with all terrain / mud and snow but narrower than 325.

-IF-

I can keep the cost of the replacement rims and tires below $300 combined ... I figure I would come out ahead.

If it were my truck, I would restore it to stock rims. Maybe you could get stock rims at the junkyard for under $50 each. Sometimes you will find a full set of rims on Craigslist for $100. Personally, I think most "lift" is just for show anyway, especially in the city, so you probably could lower it back to stock too.

I’m confused. $1400 is REALLY high for 4 new tires.

It's jacked up with oversized wheels and tires. Gives a guy a high vantage point and lots of visibility in stop-and-go rush hour traffic, which is where I usually see them.

Cooper tires have always done well by me.

on the 79 you can. It’s much more flexible.

I wanted white wagon wheels on my 2000 yukon. it came with 20” GMC chromey shiny blingy wheels that were simply awful.

After a year on the “deep dish” steel wagon wheels I noticed a vibration. The stress of the hub started to affect the wheel. I had to go to stock wheels.

I learned alot about the GMT800 wheel selection from that one. This time I’m going for a GMC slotted steely with perhaps 2 inches in hub adaptor. Not sure yet, tons of math to do.

But the older ones just looked so cool with those wagon wheels. 5 lug jeep guys have it so easy. 6 lug GMT800 guys have it rough.

Michelin tires are also made in the USA.
20 inch rims are on our new GMC Acadia.

my 03 Suburban is now considered a “small” vehicle. Serious. Park mine against a newer Toyota Tundra. The new trucks are simply enormous.

But I still get a good view from my stock suspension, stock wheel heights. I don’t think even 4 inches will make a big difference.

Good evening.

Find these items:
1 GMC Sierra 2500 HD
4 friends
4 neumatic wrenchs
8 cinder blocks
1 case of beer

Sorry, that was bad.

I bought out of ignorance a few years ago, some 16 inch 5 lug gray wheels, Cragars.

They never got used. Not practical for my Willys, too wide. I had my CJ7’s wheels chrome powder coated since I had nice original centercaps.

I’ve tried selling the Cragars every so often. No bites.

Besides being cheaper, stock size tires will give you better fuel economy. Sometimes significantly better. Also, there’s less wear and tear on the drive train. Maybe you can sell the fancy rims to pay for part of the cost new tires, or maybe if you put an ad on craigslist you can find someone who will trade your custom wheels for some stock ones with decent tread.

Wagon wheel style is a lot cheaper and low maintenance.

When my 2013 Nissan Rogue needed tires, I got a set of four Yokohama Geolanders with 10-11/32 tread depth left for $120 from Best Used Tires. They do a visual inspection and a pressure test on all their tires, have a 30 day warranty against missed defects, and had them to me within 72 hours. I think a lot of their tires come off of fleet and rental vehicles and they were pulled and replaced with threadbare old tires before the vehicles go off to auction. They looked factory new when they arrived.

look up and learn about aspect ratios and tire comparison calculators.
They are on the Internet.
the height is most important. Variables of 1 to 1/1/2 inch height wont effect your speedo or trans shifts too much.
The common popular sizes in everything keep the cost down.
Famous brands tend to be way over over rated and over priced too.

Too much lift kind makes it tough putting stuff in the bed.

A little lift, maybe 2 to 4 inches is plenty.

I plan to get a 2 inch kit for my worn out Willys springs.

When the budget allows...

My high school auto mechanics teacher always said you can’t hotrod just a little bit. There is always give and take.

Try a scrap yard.
Look for wrecks with front end damage, and take the rear set.
Or, get the full size spare under the bed.

Years ago, the Chev Sprint had a full size spare, not a donut.
I negotiated up front on price, then picked out four tires and rims from Sprints with zero rear end damage.

Miles of trouble free use

I saved some $$ at tire rack. If you get wheels and tires I think they come mounted, save another $150 or so.

high for 4 new tires.”””

MAY be 5 new tires-—the spare counts, also.

“Can you even get Maypops any more?

Used to be every service station had a used tire rack.”

There are used tires stores out there, in fact I saw one in Front Royal not 2 weeks ago, I think it was called Ron’s Used Tires, and they sell pro rated tires but I don’t know where they are sourcing them from. But there is a market for it.

the standard rim would be 16 or 16.5/split rims.”” It is getting harder & harder to find 16.5 tires.

I had to change all my tires & wheels on my 1976 Chevy 1 ton dually (7 in all) in 2005 to 16 inch set up. Cost me a bundle, but I no longer have trouble finding tires.
