“...there was blood everywhere,”
What a drama queen. I doubt there was blood everywhere. I didn’t see any here in NC.

When I first got to Panama while in the Army, I was stationed on Flamenco Island. One of the first things I did was go out and buy a salt water reel and rod and started fishing off the causeway.
All I ever caught were those damn moray eels and a couple of small sharks. I did catch one red snapper which I took to the mess hall and gave it to one of the San Blas Indians that worked in it and he cooked it up for me.

The is a true story. My dad was once on a snorkeling deserted island off the coast of Australia with the guides and a handful of other tourists. They were standing in an about a foot of ocean water. All of a sudden my Dad was in pain and the water was filled with blood. Something had gashed his foot and taken a triangle sized bite of skin. The guides told him in their heavy Australian accent, Its either a ray or a [some kind of poisonous sea creature]. Well know shortly because if its a [that creature], youll be deed in two minutes.

When I first saw this thread my reaction to post that.
The joke probably goes back to when the song became popular. I first heard it in high school in the early 70s although it was a variation.
When a big eel pops out
And bites you in the snout
Thats a moray!!!

Moray eels have a bite like the sci-fi alien which is called the pharyngeal jaw. These jaws are a "second set" of jaws contained within an animal's throat, or pharynx, distinct from the primary or oral jaws. They are believed to have originated as modified gill arches, in much the same way as oral jaws.
Most fish species with pharyngeal teeth do not have extendable pharyngeal jaws. A particularly notable exception is the highly mobile pharyngeal jaw of the moray eels. These are possibly a response to their inability to swallow as other fishes do by creating a negative pressure in the mouth, perhaps induced by their restricted environmental niche (burrows). Instead, when the moray bites prey, it first bites normally with its oral jaws, capturing the prey. Immediately thereafter, the pharyngeal jaws are brought forward and bite down on the prey to grip it; they then retract, pulling the prey down the moray eel's gullet, allowing it to be swallowed.

moray eel probably very hungry because the tourists are scaring away its normal prey
it was only playing — because it likely could have snipped the toe off if it really was trying
