My tuckus is hurting to the tune of $5K. LOL, No, we've been having HVAC issues for a little while, and in this fetid, fecal, foul, soupy Alabama heat, the ol' gal was having issues. Condenser coils freezing, heat would cut off in winter after five minutes, the works. I called in an HVAC company to do an inspection and general maintenance, and apparently at some point in the past, the compressor unit took a big amperage surge. It overheated, burned some 240 VAC wiring, pitted points in the main compressor motor, gummed up the coolant valves, and cracked a compressor coil. He said, 'probably lightning'. My first thought was, "Oh, GOD, not two houses in six years!!!!" But this one was apparently through the public utility line and got shunted into the separate box feeding the power to it. So I got him an affidavit to fill out, and said, "Hello? Allstate?" Sure enough, a claim adjuster was at the house 11 am last Sunday morning. By the time Connie got done working her over, she had the fridge, oven, and two ceiling fans worked into the deal. LOL! They came out Friday, gutted and yanked the old Rheem setup, and put in a new, 4 ton, Payne split HVAC unit, replaced a lot of the old under-house ductwork, and installed a new smart digital thermostat. I only had to pay the deductible, and we got a unit that'll probably outlast me. The claim adjuster will be back in her office tomorrow to finish up, and that part will cover the deductible I paid, and get us a new stove, with plenty of jingle left over. The ceiling fans were already replaced, and I think the fridge was only icing up because there was some loose ductwork under the house they replaced, so we were getting humid air pumped directly past the fridge and into the floor return five feet away. It's only five years old and looks new inside and out. I gotta admit, Allstate tripped over themselves getting out claim processed and the money deposited straight to my bank card. Color me impressed at their efficiency. Plus, I got two more new freshwater ProStaff sponsorships (one of which I'm pretty sure I didn't even apply for), and I can actually get in my own pool for the first time in four years. That, in itself, is a blessing. You walk around, see this nice in-ground pool, all the work you've done to make it a centerpiece, a private little oasis, and all you can do is press your nose against the candy store window and look inside, and then you think about spending four years paying a bank for ownership of it. You tend to get a little bitter after a while. Connie already got one of those waterfall bars that replaces a water return outlet. 20 or so jets shoot an arc of water halfway across the pool at any angle you want. I love to just stand there in the shallow end and let it splash over me in this heat. I don't know if you've ever hiked down (or up) to a waterfall and just stood under it, but it brings back good memories.

Your insurance deductible is $5k? How much is a hvac system?

No, thank the Lord, our deductible was only $1k. I'd already sold off some company stock that I'd gotten as a 2016 profit sharing bonus, so I was good to go. The insurance company paid off the rest. Immediately, straight to my credit union card. I went there on the way to work this morning and squared the bill. It was a total of $4400 and change for a new 14 SEER split unit. And since it's Energy Star-compliant, I can get a $300 tax break next year (Lord knows we could use it). It's rated at 42,000 BTU (48,000 if you kick in the afterburners). They replaced a whole lot of ductwork in the process, put in a new, intuitive digital thermostat, and replaced some 240 VAC wiring that got cooked. All in all, I think I got a fair price. Ten year manufacturer's warranty, and they're only a mile up the road, plus they do 24/7 emergency calls. This model is well-regarded for its whole house heating in winter, too. We both noticed a big difference in the cooling and humidity control that evening. The one thing that sort of ruffles my feathers is that they did a not-so-cosmetically aesthetic job of installing the drain pipe for the condenser cabinet. They knocked out a hole in the brickwork in the front of the house, right along the foundation. It looks like they took a chisel and a hammer and just kept whacking at it until they made an irregular fist-sized hole to shove the pipe through. The head-shaking part was that they tried to stuff chips of brick and ornamental gravel back in to try to cover up this pothole they made. LOL I'll get out some Quikrete and fill it in, no biggie. What we are waiting for is the claims adjuster to get back to us about the large kitchen appliances and the ceiling fans I already replaced. We'll buy a new stove, but the rest I have earmarked for a contractor to finish my damn fireplace chimney, despite her protestations. I've been madder than a wet hen over having that always back-burnered every year for whatever reasons. I've railed about it the whole time. Now I have the cash-and-carry disposable income to get it out of my craw for good, and she (through a process of 'logic' only a woman understands), is getting testy about spending the money to do it. Well, hey: Who signed a two-inch stack of mortgage paperwork to buy the place? Who initiated the call to the insurance company to get the ball rolling? Who sold off stock to help finance all this without having to dip into savings? Who's been on a crusade to get the thing finished for five years?

Now shaddup and go make me a sammich. LOLOLOLOL

They aren’t. I’ll be contacted by another property adjuster who will need an estimate of all damages and cost value loss, including T&M from the electrician performing the work. It’s been a two-step process, and it’s becoming a monumental pain in my gluteal anatomy, but my main claims adjuster called a few hours ago and said everything’s moving forward as scheduled. I hope to have this wrapped up by this time next week. Then, onward and upward.

Sorry to keep bothering you with this but I'm wondering how your wife was able to get appliances replaced like this. Or maybe I'm confused.

Large appliances like that are considered a part of the inside-the-home infrastructure, like the AC or house wiring. Small appliances, like the toaster, computers, televisions under 32”, etc., aren’t. I talked to the claim adjuster yesterday, and they have everything forwarded to thee next level.
