In most word processing systems a double dash will turn into a long dash.

Yeah, but why'd they get the character right on the other 90 out of 93 total names on the page, that is, why use the incorrect character *at all* when it's clear you know what the right one is? And it's not the first 3 or the last 3 which might argue editing or in a hurry?
