On paper, everything was going well for Seth Owen. A valedictorian of a high school in Jacksonville, Florida, with a 4.16 grade-point average, the 18-year-old had been accepted to Georgetown University as part of its Class of 2022.
But he had left his parents house in February after they had given him an ultimatum to attend their church, after years of disagreements related to his sexuality - Owen is gay - or move out, he told NBC News. And Georgetowns financial aid package for him had been calculated based on what his family was expected to contribute, leaving him with a $20,000 gap to pay the tuition for his first year.

> It very well could be a scam to raise cash.
It’s so predictably easy to do that everyone who needs college funding should try some variation of this. Fools and their money, and all that.
This place makes me feel so bad sometimes. A lot of you agree with getting rid of your child who might be gay. Ugh. Youre as intolerant and nasty as the worst leftists. And you dont even see it.
A Free Republic does not mean A Republic in which Everyone Does What You Like. Either its free for everyone or it isnt free.
And he has sickle cell anemia...
I cant believe the hateful comments here. I imagine all post authors are perfect and free of sin. I will pray for you.
Add another 100 grand for that. How about “His partner is an undocumented immigrant from Haiti endangered of being deported because of Trumps end to temporary protection for Haitians”. That should be worth at least another 25 grand there. With Trump mentioned maybe add 25 more.
One cannot get reliable information one way or the other. The left is more restrictive than any churchs biggest dream. Entire subjects are now off-limits to every reputable scholar or scientist because they may inadvertently offend current social doctrine.
Mankind is a religious creatureeven more so when atheistic. When legitimate studies contradict the accepted social agenda, they are discarded and abandoned with prejudice. The empirical evidence of physical damage due to male homosexual behavior is irrefutable with or without AIDS in the picture. Actuarial data is not available due to the current social climate:

Neither does it mean freedom to practice depravity. You are not the measure of civic virtue, despite the indoctrination thats been going on for forty some years.
That you see a difference between homosexuality and, say, necrophilia is the measure of just how successful that indoctrination has been.
I doubt the stereotypical kicked out of house simply for being gay you see in the movies exists in any significant fashon anymore if it ever really was common. You might as well get mad about jaguar maulings in texas. Theres probably more to the story. One things for sure its a good way to rake in some dough.
So no matter what we as a society have decided is legal, if you think something is depraved it should be prohibited.
Yeah, youre clearly all about freedom.
My freshman year in college I was offered $10K "for [my] body" by the wealthy friend of a gay guy I had (only) met. (The assuming donor regularly flew in to the school from the New England in his family's private jet.)
An avowed heterosexual, I turned it down, and promptly departed for a different school, having to give up my full ride scholarship in the process.
(No, my body is no great shakes. Some people and their "friends" are just that sick.)
I'd bet there was some "reciprocity" sought for the tuition in this story being covered for the valedictorian.
I think the country youre looking for is just down the road, Civic VirtueLand. It doesnt matter how I would contrast homosexuality and necrophilia. A free country can have laws decided on by the people. But what isnt against the law is ok even if you dont personally like it.
“...what we as a society have decided is legal...”
Five un-elected liberal judges decided that homosexual marriage is constitutional. That is a far cry from we as a society.
PS. Court rulings can be overturned. What’s legal today can be illegal tomorrow.
Lighten up.
Maybe some of us here are a little jaded from all of the false accusations of racist comments to waiters, or nooses and swastikas being found on college campuses and people getting hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations for being liars.
Really? Whats legal is a-ok? Have you forgotten that slavery was legal and the law of the land at one time?
It was only overturned because people of virtue deemed it as deprived and, get this, worth dying over.
Ultimately this story is about a boy brainwashed by public school propaganda and rebelling against his parents who decided to invite the whole world in to teach his parents a lesson. See? Hes better than them because he believed in the secular religion du jour and worships the golden calf.
Very few can afford Georgetown tuition without scholarships and loans. I mean even Congresspeople (just on their salaries alone) could not.
Wonder how many of these stories appeared in the press when Obama was President.
My comment wasnt really about this news story but about the FReepers who just pile on about how horrible homosexuality is. It gets boring.
Laws change and what isnt illegal should be accepted by those who dont like it, or get the laws changed. Like they did with gay sex and smoking and motorcycle helmets. And slavery. Whether each individual thinks each of these changes are ok or not, that is how freedom works.
How would taxes work on something like GoFundMe?
