This is the location of the Yellowstone's hotspot track. The triangles indicate general locations of the Yellowstone and Snake River Plain age-progressive volcanoes with ages shown in millions of years, plotted on a topography map of the Western United States.

  1. So we're not all going to die from the yellowstone supervolcano?
  2. Atlantis is somewhere under Idaho?

I never bought the plume theory either.

very...

"The previously-held plume model was used to explain the unique Yellowstone hotspot track -- the line of volcanoes in Oregon, Idaho, and Wyoming that dots part of the Midwest. "If the North American plate was moving slowly over a position-fixed plume at Yellowstone, it will displace older volcanoes towards the Oregon-Idaho border and form a line of volcanoes, but such a deep plume has not been found." Zhou said. So, what caused the track? Zhou intends to find out."

But I thought the ‘science was settled.’

Gee, I wonder what else they could be wrong about.

So we're not all going to die from the yellowstone supervolcano?

Whatever the source of the heat, the volcanic activity along the trail is especially powerful because of the type of rock that makes up the magma there, namely continental/granitic rock. This type of magma is very thick and viscous, and so traps more explosive gases which then build up leading to the historic super erruptions there.

In Idaho we’re just waiting for the thing to get safely over the border into Wyoming. Then we won’t have to worry about it anymore.

Boise, Idaho has a Geothermal Heating District that provides hot water heat to homes.

So asteroid strike?

Although some scientists believe an asteroid MAY have started the 'trail' activity in Oregon 16+ million years ago, the question here is, is it, what they've thought for some time now, the North American Plate riding over a stationary deep-seated hot spot (like in Hawaii with the Pacific Plate), or is it an ancient oceanic plate still in the process of 'subducting' (an old ocean plate diving beneath the NA Plate) that is the cause of the line of volcanic erruptions. Both, I suppose, could produce a line of volcanoes, each younger than the one before, like with Hawaii.

LOL. You’ll breathe a big sigh of relief when it finally hits the border.

It comes for us all.

Not only do the subducted plates move, but they have changed where our states are located. Oregon, Idaho, and Wyoming are now in the Midwest. People in Chicago, St. Louis, and Minneapolis need to keep an eye out for new volcanos in their neighborhoods.

Another piece of the Farallon Plate is the Juan de Fuca plate. That plate is sub ducting under the Pacific Northwest creating the Cascade volcanoes and in the future triggering a monster earthquake and potential tsunami.

According to the past two or three supererruptions along the trail, next one is due any day now.

2 million years ago, 1.3 million, 0.6 million...
