More than 1,000 tourists a day visit the island of Santorini from cruise ships in the peak season.
They use traditional transport on the hilly terrain - where cars cannot go - and are attracted to idyllic white houses in places such as the principal town of Fira.
Every day the donkeys make four to five journeys up its 520 white cobbled steps in temperatures of up to 86F (30C).
Animal rights activists claim donkeys are increasingly left with spinal injuries and open wounds from ill-fitting saddles.
They say that, with obesity on the rise, the animals are being forced to carry ever-heavier loads while they work long hours, seven days a week without shelter, rest and water.
The Help the Santorini Donkeys charity is calling for an eight-stone load restriction as the number of overweight tourists arriving from the UK, US and Russia has trebled in the past 10 years.

I’m not familiar with Aussie saddles-I rarely have the opportunity to ride, but have a saddle-an English one-I weigh 106 but I’m tall and just like the way that saddle fits/sits...
They need some mules. Get the biggest donkey and cross it with a Clydesdale...
Since mules are sterile how can they make a mule donkey hybrid?
In his later career John Waynes’ horse of choice was a chestnut horse named Dollor. Dollor appeared in “True Grit”, “The Undefeated”, “Rio Lobo”, “Chisum”, and “The Shootist”( in which he was called old dollar )
In Venezuela, donkeys have a whole different outlook on what to worry about.
Tourists don’t have to ride the donkeys. I didn’t. There is a tram.
Fat asses wrecking working asses. Something is not fair about all of this.

Good call on the chef’s part!

I would bet that horse is packing around 300 pounds with all that gear, saddle & Wayne.
It was a big horse. The Duke, being 64, rode that particular horse so to look proportional in the saddle. And, I doubt that The Duke rode the horse very much particularly later in life. Im guessing the horse had a very pleasant life....
Duke
John Wayne with all his equipment is probably close to 300 lbs
And has a sturdy mount who can handle the weight.
Coca Cola = American Champagne...lol

A stone is 14 pounds, so they're pushing for a 112 pound restriction. If these donkeys can't cut it, they need to be replaced with donkeys who *can*. :^)
BTW, there are Greek islands for sale. I like to window shop, I've always been in the no-pot-to-piss-in category.
This is an animal care and management issue.
If the business doesn’t have enough animals to rotate them out for rest and health maintenance, stop letting the business abuse its animals. Yank the license and someone else that’s not a scumbag can fill in the gap with a better run business.
