I think we should be measured and thoughtful in our language; if we want language to continue to have truly meaningful and communicable meaning.

I don't know much about firearms, but I don't think a 10mm bullet is a weak round. Here's what I found when I looked it up: --- The 10mm Auto (10×25mm, official C.I.P. nomenclature: 10 mm Auto,[7] official SAAMI nomenclature: 10mm Automatic[8]) is a powerful semi-automatic pistol cartridge first developed by American Jeff Cooper and introduced in 1983 with the Bren Ten pistol. Its design was adopted and later produced by ammunition manufacturer FFV Norma AB of Åmotfors, Sweden.[12] 10mm Auto 10MM AUTO - FMJ - 1.jpg 10mm Auto Jacketed Flat Point cartridge Type Pistol Place of origin United States Service history Used by FBI Hostage Rescue Team[1] FBI Special Weapons and Tactics Teams[2][3] Slædepatruljen Sirius[4] Production history Designer Jeff Cooper FFV Norma AB Designed 1983 Produced Since 1983 Variants .40 S&W 9×25mm Dillon 9×25mm Super Auto G .357 Sig Specifications Parent case .30 Remington[5][6] Case type Rimless Straight Bullet diameter C.I.P.: 10.17 mm (0.400 in)[7] SAAMI: .4005 in (10.17 mm)[8] Neck diameter C.I.P.: 10.74 mm (0.423 in)[7] SAAMI: .423 in (10.7 mm)[8] Base diameter C.I.P.: 10.80 mm (0.425 in)[7] SAAMI: .425 in (10.8 mm)[8] Rim diameter C.I.P.: 10.80 mm (0.425 in)[7] SAAMI: .425 in (10.8 mm)[8] Rim thickness C.I.P.: 1.40 mm (0.055 in)[7] SAAMI: .055 in (1.4 mm)[8] Case length C.I.P.: 25.20 mm (0.992 in)[7] SAAMI: .992 in (25.2 mm)[8] Overall length C.I.P.: 32.00 mm (1.260 in)[7] SAAMI: 1.250 in (31.8 mm)[8] Case capacity 1.56 cm3 (24.1 gr H2O) Rifling twist 406.40 mm (1 in 16 inches)[7][8] Primer type Large pistol Maximum pressure (C.I.P.) 230 MPa (33,000 psi)[9] Maximum pressure (SAAMI) 37,500 psi (259 MPa)[10] Ballistic performance Bullet mass/type Velocity Energy 175 gr (11 g) STHP Winchester 1,290 ft/s (390 m/s) 649 ft⋅lbf (880 J) 180 gr (12 g) FMJ Federal 1,300 ft/s (400 m/s) 708 ft⋅lbf (960 J) 155 gr (10 g) TAC-XP Doubletap Ammunition 1,400 ft/s (430 m/s) 675 ft⋅lbf (915 J) 135 gr (9 g) Controlled Expansion Doubletap Ammunition 1,600 ft/s (490 m/s) 768 ft⋅lbf (1,041 J) 230 gr (15 g) Hardcast Solid Doubletap Ammunition 1,150 ft/s (350 m/s) 676 ft⋅lbf (917 J) Test barrel length: 117 millimetres (4.6 inches)[11] Source(s): DoubleTap Ammunition Although it was selected for service by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1989 from the aftermath of the 1986 FBI Miami shootout, the cartridge was later decommissioned (except by the Hostage Rescue Team and Special Weapons and Tactics Teams) after their Firearms Training Unit eventually concluded that its recoil was excessive in terms of training for average agents and police officers' competency of use and qualification,[12] and that the pistols chambered for the cartridge were too large for some small-handed individuals.

The reason that 30.06 is good enough for Polar Bears, is that the terrain is so open. You don’t have to stop a sudden charge from 20 yards away. You will get multiple shots from a good prone firing position.
Polar Bears will virtually always try to catch and eat people that they catch sight or scent of, unless they have been negatively conditioned. They are single most reliably aggressive predator against humans, on Earth.
Because they are so dangerous, locals in Svalbard or Iceland shoot them on sight, if they are within many miles of any human habitation. On Svalbard, you can rent rifles at the main airport in Longyearbyen. No one is supposed to leave the town limits unarmed.

"I don't know much about firearms, but I don't think a 10mm bullet is a weak round. "No, not by any means. My understanding is that it's somewhere between more powerful than the .357 magnum and maybe just a bit short of the .41 magnum revolver rounds. I have no experience with the 10mm myself, however I've shot a few .40 S&W handguns, which is the 10mm's little brother, so to speak, and the perceived recoil is... notable. Considerably more so than the .45 auto in the same size handgun.
One would suppose that the appeal of the 10mm for bear defense might be what could reasonably be called a cartridge that is up to the task, with what, 10 or 11 backup shots?
The times, they are a-change-in'...

I’ve eaten Black Bear meat but I would never eat grizzly or polar bear. They are full of parasites. I treated a young man many years ago in Alaska that had consumed under-cooked grizzly bear. He damn near died from trichinosis. Stay away from walrus too!

Why was the crew member so close to the bear?
I’m not opposed to bear killing, but, sounds like this fool asked for it and the bear paid for it.
