I have had defensive encounters with a home invader and a car full of gang members at an ATM in Florida. A 4o S&W would be fine for that. But, now I live in the Roosevelt National Forest in the Colorado Rockies and I have 0 human encounters and more black bear encounters in 20 years than I can remember, certainly over 10. There are mountain lions too, but I never had one attack me, unlike the bears. So I carry based on my likely threat and I don't want to see a bear with a 40 S&W on me. I swap mags, lighter, expandable loads in the city. Solids at home.
Fyi I have heard people claim they routinely shoot 40 s&w in their 10 mm without changing the barrel, spring or magazine. They report no issues doing so.
