I have often wondered about the phenomenon of modern work. Although my parents both worked, when I was growing up most families had a single earner, a stay-at-home mom, and a passel of kids. At the time we were told that technology would bring untold leisure in a few decades.

Instead, we now have two-earner families struggling to make do, even though they only have one or two children. Instead of halving the work-week for the sole earner, we see both earners working extended hours, with the costs of everything (except technology) going through the roof and wages remaining stagnant.

Where did the benefits of technology go? "To the cabal" is a strong candidate for an answer.
