“Three weeks ago, a wrong way driver killed five innocent people. So far, he has not been charged. “

He knows somebody. Happens all the time in Chicago.

Was he drunk? Was he high? Was he texting or arguing with his passenger, distracted? Did he catch roadside movement out of the corner of his eye and reflexively cut the wheel to avoid a perceived threat of collision (I’ve had that one...scary as hell).

Until all the facts are in I’ll withhold judgement. Oh...and, is he of a “protected” class?

“An investigation is ongoing, but could take months to be completed, cops said.”

I don’t see why it would take that long unless checks need to clear the bank.

It’s unclear why he drifted over the grassy median and into the oncoming lane.

Well, what’d he say? How likely an answer was it? What’d this male passenger say? Who is this male passenger to the driver? If I were a reporter I’d report a hell of a lot more than is here...

My initial reaction was the same as Bonemaker, but even with the spin the media is putting on it, it isn’t clear that they have the elements of a criminal case.

Her lawyer needs to come up with some facts that will support a prosecution, not just a theory and emotion.

” pickup truck came speeding over from the opposite lane and struck them head-on.” Sounds like speeding and passing where it wasn’t safe on a two lane road.

Then we get this?

“he drifted over the grassy median and into the oncoming lane.” Still sounds like a two lane road, but one with a divided grassy median?

And drifting or speeding? Totally different image pictures are painted in those two paragraphs. So I retract what I said about a theory - they don’t even have one yet. Just emotion.

Charges can take time. The DA has to gather evidence and make sure all the T’s are dotted and the i’s crossed. He would not want to screw the case up.

You don’t know that it was anything more than some sort of medical episode, mechanical failure or just distracted driving. The truck was not driving wrong way it crossed over at speed. Seems a charge of unsafe movement at a minimum could be made but beyond that is speculation. A lot is not said in this article.

It shouldn’t be difficult to determine how he wound up in the wrong lane.

This is horrible for this person, a person would be hard put to understand.

Now to the facts of the case. If there was no intent, or chargeable offense like drunk or drugged, playing a game or inattention due to sex going on, or cell phone usage, it was just an accident. We all will die someday, and a court case and jail time will not solve the problem of people being dead. It also will not prevent another such accident by this guy or another. Sometimes things just happen, like when a frozen airliner toilet load hits someone in their bed. Or someone falls asleep at the wheel. There is not always intent, or neglect. stuff actually does happen. Maybe this lady is the same one who held the sign up in London to protest Trump saying “WHY DOES STUFF KEEP ON HAPPENING”? IDK

Did they mention the kids weren’t wearing seat belts ? Feel terrible for the family but you need to take precautions when driving.

The accident happened at 3:45 PM, in what looks like clear, dry conditions.

The guy should be charged with involuntary manslaughter at the least.

I find it very interesting that he is not identified and that no charges have been filed. It’s like there’s a complete blackout on info about the driver and these days it arouses my suspicions about things like immigration status.

Also, the top of the car looks sheared off. Maybe the mom had the presence of mind to duck but I doubt that the bodies of the rest were intact.

There was an accident like that a couple years ago in our area on I-81 and it turned out the woman was drunk.

She was charged but I do not recall the outcome of that case.

I *think* she was charged and jailed.

Asleep. Drunk. Or possibly some mechanical issue with the truck....which is highly doubtful.

Ya know, based on some of the responses it’s amazing how many here don’t seem to have the slightest clue regarding common sense basic defensive driving tactics.

crossed the grassy center median from the southbound lane into the northbound lane around 3:45 p.m., cops said.

I'd like to see how wide the grass medium is in the area of the collision.

Could be a drunk, a medical problem, blown tire, mechanical issue, distracted then over corrected causing the vehicle to lose control. Even cases of wasps flying into the interior of vehicles has caused significant carnage and death..Fell asleep.. Or maybe he just wan't paying attention to the direction his vehicle was traveling. Cell phone, etc...
