UPDATE: Ben Brantley has issued an apology over his review for HEAD OVER HEELS. To read more click here.
Late Thursday evening, following the publication of the New York Times theatre review of Head Over Heels, members of the Broadway community took to social media to express outrage over a review which many have dubbed transphobic.
Early in the review, critic Ben Brantley seems to invalidate an entire gender identity, writing "And its dichotomous nature matches the didactic thrust of a show that celebrates the importance of not being (and pardon me, for trotting out what's starting to feel like the decade's most overused word) binary."
Later in the review he purposefully misgenders a non-binary character, played by trans actress Peppermint (the first openly trans woman to play a principal role on Broadway) - writing "Dametas (Tom Alan Robbins), the King's viceroy and father of Mopsa, finds himself strangely drawn to her - I mean them."
In the show, it is explicitly stated early on (and is a major plot point) that the character Brantley is referring to uses the pronouns they/them.

Whatever.
Homosexuality is prison sexuality... there is no end to the level of harassment and depths of hell
Trans are almost always men, because they are essentially shameless perverts willing to be seen as complete freaks in order to lust over naked and vulnerable women.
Female trans are not only rare, they’re not as big a deal. Nobody cares if there’s a female in the men’s bathroom. Nobody cares if a female wants to compete with men in sports. Nobody tends to mind if a female wants to expose her body in locker rooms to men.
The other way around on any of those questions and many others is not acceptable at all. So when we talk “trans” we can be very specific and talk about the males who are doing this.
People actually getting upset over a critics REVIEW of a play, the insanity is getting worse.
The mentally ill Trans crowd demands that everyone join them in their insanity or they scream vile things and jump up and down in demonic rage. When will society start isolating them for the good of everyone else?
Title for a country song? LoL
As the lead Times critic he has been the big kahuna lead Broadway critic for 20 years.
And as a gay man himself, writing for the Times, always assumed to be the height of sophisticated political correctness.
Trannies were pretty much added to the LGB community by straight liberals. Gays and lesbians weren't consulted. They were basically told, "You can have crossdressers too!"
Trannies aren't welcome in all corners of the gay community, particularly among many lesbians, who view transwomen as sexual deviants.
Transphobic is an ersatz term.
