UPDATE: Ben Brantley has issued an apology over his review for HEAD OVER HEELS. To read more click here.
Late Thursday evening, following the publication of the New York Times theatre review of Head Over Heels, members of the Broadway community took to social media to express outrage over a review which many have dubbed transphobic.
Early in the review, critic Ben Brantley seems to invalidate an entire gender identity, writing "And its dichotomous nature matches the didactic thrust of a show that celebrates the importance of not being (and pardon me, for trotting out what's starting to feel like the decade's most overused word) binary."
Later in the review he purposefully misgenders a non-binary character, played by trans actress Peppermint (the first openly trans woman to play a principal role on Broadway) - writing "Dametas (Tom Alan Robbins), the King's viceroy and father of Mopsa, finds himself strangely drawn to her - I mean them."
In the show, it is explicitly stated early on (and is a major plot point) that the character Brantley is referring to uses the pronouns they/them.

Just read that he is gay. More fighting in the LGBTQ community.
I never did learn the metric system when they tried to force us to change.
I’m going to add this trans-system to my list of no-goes.
He seems to have Rex Reed’s wickedly clever turn of phrase and Reed’s sharpness.
He made the apology but he is seething
I think John Semmens need to review this production.
Ooops, I made Semmens plural, not binary. Sorry.
The left eats its own.
I give up too , keeping up with the transsexual stuff.
There are over 50 gender identities. I am not going to learn what they are .
“the character Brantley is referring to uses the pronouns they/them.”
How about “it”, like the movie? You freaks make me wanna gag..
How hard would it have been to observe “The show celebrates gender fluid opinions to the point of wanting to exclude actual sex, which is binary, as a legitimate fact.”?
To know who has the power, look at who you cannot criticize. Voltaire.
I’m not learning any new pronouns either. Ms is as for as I go.
Wouldn’t see it on a bet
They should have given it to Charles Isherwood. When my husband’s play got bad reviews from Isherwood, our director said “If it isn’t about c*cks*ckers in Oklahoma, it isn’t going to get a rave.” Isherwood would have loved this and used all the right pronouns.
Most transgenders (80-90%) are biological men. Most of those (75%+) keep the male plumbing while identifying as women.
That’s why the demands to have gender IDENTITY and access to facilities is so divisive - it is a demand for biological men with the plumbing to enter women’s bathrooms, locker rooms, showers, dorms, shelters. If they’d had the plumbing removed, there wouldn’t be an uproar.
The conflict between TERFS (trans exclusionary radical feminists) and transgenders is that most of these biologically intact men identify as female AND lesbian.
These men are overwhelmingly heterosexual. That’s part of the irony - most have normal sexual preferences but deny being men. End result - they’re demanding to be recognized as lesbians by lesbians. Lesbians, women who prefer women, are being bullied by other liberals and LBGTXYZ to have sex with mentally ill men. How dare you refuse to have sex with a fellow lesbian, you’re more privileged than him because you’re cis-gender!
Yes, liberals have gone to the insane extreme of sexual freedom - that you aren’t allowed to say no to a potential sexual partner.
The dream of the free-sex utopia is that everyone would be perfectly happy if only they had sex whenever they felt like it, with whomever they wanted. This breaks down, as your final sentence observes, the minute A wants to have sex with B, but B doesn’t want to have sex with A.
There’s a reason all utopias turn into totalitarian nightmares.
Unfortunately, far too many people of both sexes and various political persuasions aren’t willing to let go of the dream. “If only we try harder to pretend it’s working, it will!”
Everyone can play :-)
All my friends either have “dicks” or “vaginas”.
The ones with “dicks” are men.
The ones with “vaginas” are women.
Period.
