Once upon a time, I had a job with a company-owned cafeteria in the building. While I could still bring my lunch if I wanted, the cafeteria had some really great food at a really low price. As someone who prefers a real meal over a sandwich in most instances, I was a fan.
Now, however, it seems such places are a problem in San Francisco, where frankly everything can be a problem if it tries hard enough.
As the San Francisco Examiner reports: "Two city legislators on Tuesday are expected to announce legislation banning on-site workplace cafeterias in an effort to promote and support local restaurants."
Sponsored by Supervisor Ahsha Safai and Supervisor Aaron Peskin, the measure seeks to use the zoning laws to bar companies from having on-site cafeterias, because the economy or something.
(snip)
They want to push these people out of their workplaces with the idea that they'll then visit other restaurants in the city. The problem is, it'll push a lot of those employees to just bring their lunch or grab fast food. That's why the supply/demand graph looks the way it does. Part of the allure of on-site cafeterias is the cost and convenience. You can get a good meal just steps away from your desk.
If you take that away, they're not going to flock to sit-down restaurants in the city where there's going to be a rush, possibly a wait for seating, then a wait for food. Those are all things that take away that time from the workers. Instead, they'll grab fast food just to avoid being rushed.

Socialists can always find something to micromanage and screw up, at the same time taking away your freedoms.
More driving to go get lunch.
More Global Warming from car exhaust
More gasoline burned
More tires sold
More stupidity from the politicians of San Fran.
More smog air mailed east to the foothill counties of Calif.
Well, we have been saying that for years, but California is humming along just fine, it seems. Calfornia just passed the UK to become the world’s 5th largest economy. Someone is doing business in Cali.
Will they ban people from bringing in their own sandwiches?
This is funny. Make the business people walk through crap to eat lunch.
All the big tech headquarters in San Fracisco have very nice cafeterias. This will not pass.
Ban kitchens in the home and Supermarkets ,that the ticket
The avg employee likes eating in the Company subsidized cafeteria. Is the SFO gov going to give them free lunch coupons to make up the cost to the avg working stiff. They are looking for cheap lunch eats / Not a 15 to 20 lunch.
I guess they need to have people eat out to pay the $15.00 Min wages that the subway guy is being paid.
Don’t give them even more ideas .....
I work in a “downtown” and it’s a nightmare.
Homies selling drugs, and the mentally ill panhandling are just annoying. There was a shooting/murder a few blocks from my office a couple a weeks ago during business hours. It was only a couple of homies, but just wait until it’s one of these “displaced lunch hour employees” who gets rolled and/or killed by another Jose Inez Garcia Zarate like Kate Steinle did.
Downtown is a ghost town now. There is NOBODY down there. There are only government workers, and lawyers who are in the courthouse. Beyond that... it’s depressing. No pretty young girls, no young men, just the middle-aged bureaucrats and the lawyers defending the homies and their ilk.
San Franpsycho.
These cities are desperate to spread the (mainly) white workers’ wages around to the (mainly) non-white businesses in the area; Newark NJ is desperately trying to keep people around after 5:00 pm as well, but has few takers. Too many neighboring towns have better restaurants in safer environments.
Even attracting workers in these cities has become a real challenge; many places (like Newark’s Gateway Center) let you move around through elevated walkways over the main streets from building to building so you’re not beset by panhandlers and race-warrior Simbas. A friend that works there describes scenes reminiscent of “The Walking Dead”, as roll-down gates in Penn Station are closed as evening arrives to control the access of the mutants.
San Francisco Liberals would be wise to deal with the feces and needles in their streets and their mass exodus of taxpayers out of the urine feces-smelling city.
Tourism will soon be totally dead. The Liberals will be left alone to play with their illegals minus the drying up tax dollars.
Straws, really? Liberalism is truly a mental disease.
Essex County contrived to have a sports arena built in Newark NJ, and the NJ Devils hockey team left their home in the Meadowlands to play there (since Newark is chock-full of hockey fans /s). They don’t have sufficient parking (they were going to “socially engineer” people to take mass transit, which didn’t work), and they have an arrangement where they can use company lots in the area when they have events at night. The problem is that you wait a few blocks away from the armed compound for a shuttle to pick you up, and while waiting you’re at the mercy of the bipedal hyenas. The minor league baseball team that was going to revive Newark before that (the Newark Bears) have already folded and the stadium will soon be demolished; they thought “if we build it they will come”, but too many people in the surrounding areas are the children and grandchildren of those forced to flee when the dragon Smaug arrived in Newark - they’re never coming back. In today’s economy, it is much easier (and safer, and cheaper) to just build office parks in suburbs and people drive from one ‘burb to another - completely avoiding the dangerous welfare reservations altogether.
The San Francisco legislators could take it a step further. They could ban frozen dinners from supermarkets, which will force more people to eat at their local restaurants. Who likes to cook anyway?
There’s some new law in California where you now HAVE to take a lunch/dinner break within four hours of clocking in. The high-end children’s camp my brother works at (construction work) used to give the workers a free hot lunch, the same high-end food they gave their campers but the food was only available after 1:00 pm. Now with this new law the workers HAVE to take their lunch at 11:30; therefore no more free hot lunches. One size fits all. The government really does care about you.
These idiots are thinking too small. Just ban home kitchens too and everyone will have to eat out. Duh.
